That guy from West Point is an idiot. I am a former Marine and speak from experience that we are a force to reckon with. The Corps has always been the smallest branch or said to be at least. I've already heard of the soon cutbacks so no surprises there, I think they should. That should allow for some of the guys to get promoted and get some younger guys in the seats. I miss the Corps, the brotherhood especially. Nothing can take that away.

I always thought the 220k number was good manpower. Always felt we were a little lean when we were drawn down to 170k.

Once again the services are jealous of our airpower and amphibious prowess..they don't understand the capability of combined air and ground units. The Army has relied on the Air Force for ground support, usually with less than desirable results. Marine Aviation train with the grunts and can fly closer support missions than the Army will EVER get from the Air Farce....just look at Grenada..can you say charlie foxtrot?

    +1,000,000...

Not to seem political here, but the last time such massive force reductions were made was in the Carter Administration. Though I can support trimming the fat as it were, wholesale cuts as they are being discussed will do nothing but damage the ability of my Beloved Corps to project power and take the fight beyond the shores of the enemy. Such reductions serve to make Marines targets rather than weapons.

I hope the incoming Commandant leads his men with courage and conviction rather than bending to political will.

I heard the same story in '62 when I first went in. The Corps has too many ex marines in politics and places that count to become extinct or another Army division. We have too much of a history to be screwed with and we are much more inovative in combat arms that any service.

Wish I was back in, Bill

No sense getting into politics on this. It's obvious where it's coming from.
It's not the first time they've cut us to the bone. Thing about it is that we can still get the job done no matter what they do to us.
You learn quickly in the Corps that you do the job. No matter what it takes or no matter what you have to work with. "make do with what you've got until you get better".
The USMC turned loose can handle about any situation put to us.
It's back to the "Westmoreland/Johnson mentality" or so it seems. The U.S.M.C. is best used moblle and not "tied to a stake". Westmoreland never had a clue.
We can and will do the job no matter what it is.
Personally I always liked our quick strike capabilities and then hand it over to the Army to hold. We're an attack force best used in an offensive situation. Let the Army hold the bases and let the Marines do what we're trained for. To take the fight to the enemy and not wait for them. I never have liked the "reaction" warfare.
Strike hard, clean it out, hand it over. Move on to the next objective. We're a mobile force to be reckoned with like no other force in the world. We're adaptable to any situation and to be "stereotyped" by this clueless a-hole means nothing. No sense getting in an uproar just yet.
How long does it take to assemble a U.S. Marine? They always call on us to make a show of force. IF..IF they turn us loose and let us do what we're capable of then the "show of force" will mean something again. Seems like the new idiots in charge have no conception of the capabilities of the U.S.M.C. and worse is that not many around the world have any idea of the consequences of "unleashing the devil dogs of war".
It's always been the idiot politicians controlling the wars and the purse strings and will continue to be.
Don't ya just love the expert advice by some dumb SOB that never served anything besides himself.
    Semper Fi my brothers.

(pssssst, stay away from the g-u-n-s. They'll cause the Nancy's to start whining)

Marines are like cops, nobody likes them......until they're NEEDED!
I didn't read that whole article, but, from what I did read, stating that Marines haven't done any major battles since Inchon is dumb. How about Tet, and Fallujah?

As far as the notion that amphibious assaults are no longer necessary, maybe Cincpacflt should film the next 'Colonel Blitz' exercise.
I was impressed from my vantage point on the port bridge wing:rolleyes:

I think all you have to do is post something about guns and then qualify it with "...I don't mean for this to be about guns," and everything will be OK.

Seems to work for politics and religion.

I brought back about a dozen I didn't "distribute". I might have a couple left in decent shape. After all, they're over 40 years old now. I placed them in books to straighten them up. I'll see what I've got left.
Stay tuned to this station for coming announcements. LOL!

I've got two left in good shape. I'm willing to
part with one of them. I'll probably have to "draw a name out of the hat" to be fair.
Some pics from a couple of minutes ago.
BTW, I still run around in the old "Cover" every day. I "found" a few covers on the way out the door when they put me out to pasture. I've got a couple of them left also.
My old Zippo was retired the same day.
Later model reproduction 3rd Marines Zippo I retired a couple of years ago.

Yeah I got a nice cover myself. I'll have to post some pics. If you want to trade or just going to draw names put my name in there. That card is sweet, heck I'd even take a photo copy. I'll blow it up and frame it. Pics to come.

I'm sure I could have it photo copied at Kinkos or similar office place. They do business cards so I'm sure they can do original size with a similar paper stock.
I've got a few more "momentos" but I'm 100% positive most wouldn't want to see them here.
I've got a lot of "killer" photos and keepsakes from my earlier days in the Corps.
Dangit bro, those were some kickarse times. I've regretted getting too old and banged up to have been able to have stayed in but I loved the life.

    LOL! I've turned "non-confrontational" when I'm drinking.
The alcohol tainted decisions of my youth are hopefully behind me. I've screwed the pooch enough for more than one good man in my life. Now when I'm getting a buzz I just shut up and play nice.
Then again, it was probably a timing thing where I wasn't carrying a huge buzz either. Yep. Quitter.
