Computer problem

okkk.

soo I've had this problem for awhile but lately have been trying to figure out what the heck is going on and wanted to see if anyone else here would have a suggestion.

My computer is fully up to date with the service pack 3 blah blah blah and everything running windows XP media center edition.

Every time I plug an ipod into my USB drive it recognizes that it is an ipod, however wants to install a driver for it. Regardless of what I do when following the suggestions by apple it doesn't work. It will say a driver can not be found and the hardware will not work correctly and the ipod will not appear in itunes. I have this same trouble with my iphone, however that won't even ask for a driver, it just simply will make the sound that something is plugged in and not work.

I have tried updating the driver via the hardware off of my computer, properties, and blah blah blah, and nothing is working.

USB ports will not also recognize a plug and play item, such as an external DAC. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Only thing I can figure out is to uninstall the service packs and reinstall as there could have been a problem with them with the USB driver updates? Does that make sense?

If you look at device manager, 'Universal Serial Bus controllers' doesn't show anything with an obvious issue underneath it? Show all hidden devices in there as well.

I assume your iPod and iPhone are both USB 2.0 devices.. and it's not a matter of enabling legacy USB support in your BIOS or something... I'm not sure if you mentioned all of this was working before at some point.

Windows 7 is the truth for a reason bro. Since your XP look for conflicts in device manager. I've had this issue once before, I reinstalled Itunes and my USB drivers for my mobo and that took care of it. If that does not work for you, boot into windows, then restart, get into your Bios, turn your USB ports off and boot windows. Restart and enable the USBs then boot. It could be something simple getting hung up somewhere.

I had 2 older Ipods that worked with this system with no problem. Also I had a plug and play printer that was a 2.0 that worked fine.

I'll try to do the rebooting tonight when I get home. Its just drives me nuts lol. I didn't really want to step up to windows 7 if I could help it but I might have to.

For grins, try using a different cable. I used a different usb cable, same D-port end, when I hooked up my non-iPod DAP, and kept getting all kinds of errors.
That cable works just fine for my camera.

Also, sometimes what happens is with all the dang updates, one of those updates breaks drivers like USB or modems. I've seen it. If you remember when it was working, and it wasn't all that long ago, try rolling back with Restore and see if the drivers work.

nope its not the cable. I've had about 4 of them in and out and doesn't make a difference.

When it worked I can't recall, it was probably about 3-4 months ago maybe?

    +1 to Sherardp's recommendation.

I've had one similar situation. Turned out the USB ports in front of an old PC were all connected to an internal USB hub (part of the case) that controlled the front ports was going bad but only the iPod was affected (used to work). USB mouse or keyboard had no issues plugged into the front port. USB ports in the back were not affected since they were directly on the mobo. You may want to test the iPod on all the USB ports.

+2. I think this error crops up as a default response to the device not being loaded properly. It may be a power issue. If you can try other ports, another cable, and maybe a self-powered hub, I'll bet you get it.
