Need help picking a new sub! PSW10 or PSW505

Hi,

I'm currently in the process of upgrading my surround sound speakers. I just got some Monitor 60 Series II's for the front and I got a CS1 center not too long ago. I will be moving my T15's to the rears. Right now, I have a cheap Jensen sub and am looking at getting a new one. At first I wanted to get a PSW10, which I could find for $90-100. Now, I just saw that the PSW505 is on sale at NEWEGG for $220. I really want to keep costs down, but is it really worth it to splurge and get the PSW505? Would it overpower the rest of my speakers? Thanks for any help!

psw505 is a no brainer... psw10 is only better than no sub, 50 watts of rms...
they are not in the same class.

505 all the way. For that price point, it can't really be beat. Plain and simple. As far as the PSW10 goes, like Siva mentioned, 50w RMS. You mentioned the PSW505 having the possibility of "overpowering" your speakers. Well, given, if you cranked the gain, any PSW that can put out supple power can be overpowering if not configured correctly. But it's better you have the power for your application, than not have it at all (which is where you'd be in terms of the PSW10).

    Just my 2 cents.

I moved from a PSW12 to a PSW505 and the difference was real. The 505 is a much better sub.

I got a PSW10 when I bought a Onkyo receiver from Newegg for free, if your on a budget it works well. I havent heard the 505 but thats a decision that your wallet will have to live with!

I picked up the 505 a couple months back, great sub. As far as overpowering, as long as you tweak it the way you want, it really shouldn't be a problem. Something that may reduce your concern is to know the 505 has its own volume control (among other features).
Also, just be aware, a small sub this is not...

    Good luck!

Without a doubt, 505. The 10 wouldn't be loud enough for a room bigger than a dorm room or a bathroom. Not a bad sub but no power. The 505 is ten times the sub for double the price. If the 505 is too loud for you or your room, they put a gain on the back to drop it or you can adjust the receiver's setting.

My favorite topic that keeps coming up, the PSW505. As I have stated in several other post I believe it to be as good as the servo $1000 Velodyne I bought 10 years ago. Are there better subs? Yes. Is the DSW better? probably. My guess is marginally. I have not seen a new in box DSW 500 or 600 under $400 so it would have to be 40% better. For the $250 everyone should own two. I like the idea of a bathroom sub, Thanks Toxis!

I have a 14 X 22 room I plopped it down where my Yamaha owners guide said to put a sub and have no dead spots. I put a PSW303 in the same spot and instant lack of bass and the creation of deadspots. I wouldn't worry much about tweeking and just use the volume control as you see fit. The 505 will do the job. I am glad I did not fall into the trap of a cheap refurbed PSW10 or PSW110.

As long as PSW505 are at $250 and no other sub gets closed out at a price within $100, I do not see where any discussion is needed.

I am in total agreeance with the 505, it is the best option out there for a budget friendly HT sub, IMHO. I have fought long and hard with myself not to get one to replace my PSW125, but it works for me, so I have kept it. The extra cost up front may make it seem like it is not worth it, the difference in performance will show you that you made the right decision. Good luck, and welcome to Club Polk.

You may want to also look into HSU Research subs (link). Their price-point is typically higher, but they offer excellent products and have a sale going on right now for the STF-1 (-$50).
