I think you'll be very happy with the Epson. I have the the 6100 and I love it.

I still have not decided on where to install it. According to the calculator I could install it at the back of the room (18 ft). This would make installation a lot easier, but would stretch a bit the requirements on the PJ. If I install it in the ceiling closer to the screen, installation would require more work but I could probably run the PJ with less brightness and save some bulb life, or so I've heard.

Here's the question. If I mount it on the ceiling between the 1st and 2nd row of seats, how distractive can it be for the people in the second row?

Recommendations on a ceiling mount?

To consider is fan noise and heat generated by the PJ. I am not sure about the specific PJ you ordered but in most cases technology has improved in that regard but also keep in mind that the noise may get alittle louder as years go by. As far as visual aspect of the room the PJ as far back is ideal as once people a seated they won't notice a thing. In most cases, when at all possible the PJ being as far as possible in the back the better it is (unless you are willing to drop a few more $$$$ for rear projection , money is no object, right ? ).

BTW; Monoprice has dirt cheap projector mount if you haven't ordered yet from them.

Chief makes excellent PJ mounts...

Some points to consider...
the further back you place the projector, generally the sharper the image cause you will only use the center of the lens. The closer the projector to the screen, the more area of the lens will be used. You then start getting chromatic abberations from the aspherical shape of the lens (more curve towards the edges).

but the further back the projector, the dimmer the image gets as the light gets weaker. It's best to choose a middle range in most cases.

My projector sits above the second tier of seats and is quiet enough where it does not bother people.

As you can see, my theater is dark (the gray is darker than what it looks like) and has complete light control. The room looks bright because of my external high-powered flash on my camera. Although it has 12 40-watt lights, the room is still dark when the lights are on. That huge CRT projector is long gone... It weighed 200 lbs and is now occupied by a JVC RS-1 D-ILA unit which is a lot smaller, lighter and quieter.

Nice setup jon s, and good to see you finally going digital. I started out with the HD1 and now an RS10 paired up with a Carada 126" screen in my own setup.

As for best mount, I would suggest Chief mount, the RPAU as it is universal and will work with future upgrades. As for mounting; the 8100 is plenty bright so at 19ft you will still be ok there, mounting a little closer will increase lumen output. Fan noise is usually minimal but varies pj to pj so you will have to decide if it's loud or not. I can tell you the PQ is very nice on these. Congrats on the order, what screen did you end up with?

Projector people also carries the down pipe and ceiling mount if needed. I ended up at like $169 with everything to include 6" inch down pipe.

Oh, just thinking... On a shelf like this the PJ will be mounted up side versus the typical up side down of ceiling mount and due to the angling of the light/lense I figure your PJ would need to be mounted lower on the wall so you have to make sure it clears people's heads when sitting. Just food for tought...

Yes, vertical & horizontal shift. It provides lots of mounting flexibility.

It is best not to use vertical or horizontal shifting as it introduces image issues. The projector should be setup in its optimum state.

Also, avoid high gain screens as they usually have a hot spot in the middle. lower gain screens are more light balanced across the face.

Keystone adjustment will degrade the video projection but IMHO mechanical shifting of the lense should not affect PQ.

Agreed. You only get chromatic aberration if you go to the extreme on the lens shift. You can go 1/4 screen height/width with next to no ill effects, which makes placement very flexible. But it certainly doesn't hurt to put the projector fairly centered with the screen if you can.

I don't think there's a lot of people that can place the projector vertically centered with the screen.

FWIW, my PJ is on my back wall on a shelf about 6ft off the floor and about 15ft from the screen. I've never had any issues.

That's a great looking shelf. Much nicer than the Home Depot shelves I'm using:o:D

Damn, I wish I had seen that before I cobbled together my Home Depot shelf. That looks nice!

I have mine on top of an old audio rack I got a long time ago. Puts the PJ very close to center of the screen and never had a problem with it. that stand though is nice! I wonder if my large PJ would fit on that...

I've been running an Epson 1080UB for well over a year now and it is a fantastic machine and the image is stunning. I bought it through Projectorpeople.com as I have with my previous two projectors. Great company with great service and support. I got a free extra bulb with mine, a good $350 savings. I swap bulbs every 6 months so they both get equal use.

As for screens and mounts. I built my own screen and shelf mount. My screen is 96", 1/4" mdf with a 2x2 wood frame. I sanded, sanded and sanded, primed, sanded and then painted with a super-flat white.

Once you go FP, you'll never go back.

Just need the cable from Monoprice delivered. That will happen tomorrow, so this weekend I'll be watching my projector....on the wall. The screen will not be here until next week.

I ordered from Best Buy on the 10th. Why Best Buy? 36 months with no interest, and I got a free Bluray player. Picked it up last night.
Ordered the shelf from Amazon yesterday and paid for one day shipping ($3.99).

Yes, running 7.1 and those are the surround backs. They don't get a lot of use.

Looks like it will be a nice setup. That seems like a great projector for the money.

I see that it has a Reon processor inside, which is one of the best up-scaling and de-interlacing chips for non-HD sources. For DVDs, you may get the best image if you feed it from an old style non-upscaling player and let the Reon do everything else.
