Subwoofer setting

I just got a new receiver (Denon AV2802) and have set the crossover frequency on the receiver to 80. I have the PSW-250 sub...what frequency do I set the sub to? Right now I have the sub set at 120 or so and am not very happy with the performance. Seems when I turn the volume up on the sub it just distorts. Any ideas?

You should get a SPL meter at Radio Shack and a calibration disc.....like Avia. Then you can calibrate everything to the same db level.Home Speakers polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired), CSi30, FX3000i, PSW250

Chris,
Doesn't the test tone feature on the receiver do the same thing?
I see you have the PSW-250, is it working out for you?Rti70's

Hey Steve,
My sub is working fine for me (of course I want a better one...eventually). The test tone on the A/V receiver works too.....but I like the one from the calibration disc. It allows me to use the "slow" weighting on my SPL meter better. Once you get your speakers and sub calibrated, it should sound a helluva lot better and better balanced. You are correct in setting you crossover on you sub higher than you A/V's cutoff. That way you don't get any kind of double cutoff between your sub and receiver.Home Speakers polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired), CSi30, FX3000i, PSW250

Thanks again Chris. Just curious....is there a certain volume level you keep your sub at? I have the knob in the back turned about 60-70% towards max level. Is this setting as critical as the crossover?Rti70's

steve,
Set the sub's filter to maximum, high as it can go to avoid any and all double filtering of the signal going to it.More later,
