So the questions are what state and how fast were you going to run up a near 500 dollar bill?

In downtown Atlanta, doing 70 (on the interstate) can get you a ticket like that. These days, municipalities are looking for every excuse to generate revenue via traffic citations. Fines and court costs have drastically increased all over the country in the last few years.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I'll have to remember that when I travel that way, I have a close friend in Atlanta who works for Emory U. I guess I'm out of the loop because I can't remember the last speeding ticket I've had. Probably a good quarter century or so--you tend to keep to the limit when you have a family in the car? Times have 'indeed' changed!

This was through murfreesboro tennessee. I've gotten one in Nashville (about 10 miles from this one) for the same thing and it was a quarter of the price. Crazy.

    17 over, no registration.

That is one frickin bill I would not like to see with my name on it. You don't get anything in return either. Just a bummer of the frikin speeding chances we all take or sometimes don't even realize we're speeding and get hit with that ticket crap instead of a warning.Whatever happened to warnings!!!!

Man.....are they for real on the outragious fines?!!

I feel for ya real bad.:(

Thats a bummer..You would think that it meant what it said, NO EXCESSIVE FINES
For years the Supreme Court had little to say with reference to excessive fines. In an early case, it held that it had no appellate jurisdiction to revise the sentence of an inferior court, even though the excessiveness of the fines was apparent on the face of the record.29 In a dissent, Justice Brandeis once contended that the denial of second–class mailing privileges to a newspaper on the basis of its past conduct imposed additional mailing cost, a fine in effect, which, since the costs grew indefinitely each day, was an unusual punishment proscribed by this Amendment.30 The Court has elected to deal with the issue of fines levied upon indigents, resulting in imprisonment upon inability to pay, in terms of the equal protection clause,31 thus obviating any necessity to develop the meaning of “excessive fines” as applied to the person sentenced. So too, the Court has held the Clause inapplicable to civil jury awards of punitive damages in cases between private parties, “when the government neither has prosecuted the action nor has any right to receive a share of the damages awarded.”32 The Court based this conclusion on a review of the history and purposes of the Excessive Fines Clause. At the time the Eighth Amendment was adopted, the Court noted, “the word ‘fine’ was understood to mean a payment to a sovereign as punishment for some offense.”33 The Eighth Amendment itself, as were antecedents of the Clause in the Virginia Declaration of Rights and in the English Bill of Rights of 1689, “clearly was adopted with the particular intent of placing limits on the powers of the new government.”34 Therefore, while leaving open the issues of whether the Clause has any applicability to civil penalties or to qui tam actions, the Court determined that “the Excessive Fines Clause was intended to limit only those fines directly imposed by, and payable to, the government.”35
    Some final words,
"If you keep banging your head against the wall,
    you're going to have headaches."

I got nailed once doing 91 through Beckley WV at 3am while pulling a boat on the way home from a week of fishing in Key West. The cop was real cool about it. After he gave we a ticket, I asked him why he didn't ask if I had been drinking or shine the flashlight inside. He said.."You were standing on your brakes when I clocked you. If you can go through here at that speed, pulling a boat...You ain't been drinking".

I had to call the local magistrate to pay my fine...I whopping $104.

Not sure what the speed limit was when you got pulled over but in some states 25 mph over is considered reckless driving and it is dont pass go directly to jail and an automatic loss of license for 1 year minimum and an humongous fine.

True enough. I am just as guilty as anyone here of speeding once in a while to some degree, I guess its up to everone to decide if paying the fine, possible points off your license and higher insurance premiums and possibly not getting employed if your looking for work or getting fired if your job requires you to use a company vehicile is worth it or not.

    REGARDS SNOW
Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

Last December, I turned right at a stop sign (no, not a traffic light...a stop sign) without coming to a complete stop from a small park onto small road that approaches Sunset Blvd. Caught on video tape and was sent a $125 ticket in the mail...4 weeks later. I was like: WTF?

I remember back in the early 1990s being stopped for a speeding few times in which the cop let me off with a warning. Obviously I'm not a cute girl...

As billbillw noted above, the times they are a changin'...

Be thankful you were not picked up in NJ. You would be paying similar fines on the tickets....the difference would be that your vehicle would have been impounded and towed away for lack of registration. Another several hundred in cost to recover.
