UFC this Saturday, think Sonnen has a chance?

For the record GSP never wanted to go down a weight class to fight Penn. For what its worth, GSP is a great fighter and the class of the UFC, but it speaks volumes when Penn moves up a weight class to fight him. Penn has always been a talker and a lot or people don't like him. But like him or not he has been willing to fight the best at any weight class. I don't think GSP would go down a weight class to fight anyone, much less Penn (again) or go up a weight class to fight Silva. He is comfortable dominating his division. And that's the reason I don't like him. If he was willing to move up and down and fight the best in each division, I would be much more willing to give him props.Shawn

I don't think GSP COULD go down a weight class. He's too big to fight at lightweight. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he had to cut a few pounds from his "walk-around" weight to get down to middleweight.
Penn IS a lightweight that likes to play the part of a small welterweight from time to time. GSP is one of the biggest welterweights i've ever seen. Him going down to lightweight would probably end up being the same as James Irvin and his disgusting Middleweight attempt, and nobody really wants to see THAT again.
I think GSP would go up a weight class, and he's been talking about it for awhile now. I bet he does it in the next year, when either A) he gets bored defending the welterweight belt, or nobody beats Silva and he has to back up his talk.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Agreed!
...and we're back...
If you want to tell me that GSP should gain weight and fight Silva, that's fine by me. I don't need to hear about how Silva should gain weight just so that he can find a fighter that will dominate him. It's his choice to fight in any class he wants, he just needs to be ready to defend his title. Again, Silva has fought multiple fights in in light heavyweight while holding his title. Has GSP done the same? Why bash a fighter that has done the things you moan about and then highlight other fighters that talk trash.
Is 'the natural' fighting anytime soon. I'd love to see his clinch technique. It would be impressive as he's retired.
I'm not going to comment on Silva's BJJ or muay thai. He can punch very well, knee extremely well, and has good takedown defense. I do think Matt Hughes and GSP are a tad better at keeping the fight standing, but Silva doesn't need to worry about them. Or does he? Do you know something about GSP that I don't? I do speak french and I am canadian, so I can holler at him and see if he wants to talk about it.
We're saying the same thing about Dana White. He has a business to run. I hope he does well and offers me free stock. Still, he has his opinions and I have mine. You do NOT cut a fighter because you don't like him. Change the rules. They've changed rules before and they'll do it again.
Does anyone remember Royce pulling people's hair out while wearing his Gi? Or hits to the back of the head? Just give the ref an option to deduct points if an opponent hides behind him. He does need to think about his safety a little bit.
Let's face it. People want to see Silva go down, but it hasn't happened yet. It will happen, and probably by submission, but not yet. He's the defending champ, so keep throwing fights at him until he gets tired of inferior opponents(Sonnen being his best match-up yet) or beaten.
Going in to that fight, I always wondered if Silva could take a beating. He proved that he can. That just makes me think he's better than he ever was. Even if he looked like he's been slacking a bit on his training. -

LOL, he's fighting in 118
As far as Gracie, back when he was doing all that I think the only rules were no biting and no eye gouging."The secret of happiness is freedom. The secret of freedom is courage." Thucydides -

Maybe I saw the fight differently than everyone else apparently. Sonnen definitely won 4.5 rounds, and no one can argue that, but to say he beat the **** out of him? Really? He dominated him and showed him what a real wrestler can do but takedowns and always pulling guard but whoop ****? Far from it. He has strength but no knowledge of what to do once on the ground. The first round, silva gave him three shots to the face, arms down and all. He barely looked phased. So once he was on the ground, he played patty cake with his face. Absolutely no power behind the shots. What few he did put power behind was blocked just enough to stop the momentum and again, didn't hit him hard. I've seen silva get beat in pride and come out like a beaten piece of meat. Look who did damage on the ground and who just wanted to be on top Sonnen just gave him a workout. Sonnen slipped and even after 4.5 rounds of losing didn't shake silver mental game to not wait and strike (like a spider?? Haha pun) for the win. Clearly silva wasn't at his best and overestimated sonnen. Even call it his arrogance but he didn't expect what would happen like it did. But a W is a W. Still holds the belt and rightfully so. He's a hundred times better a fighter than sonnen. Sonnen would give it up to the next challenger where silva has owned it for how long?Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.

This coming from the man(man?) who lives in denial?
edit: I hope Randy does fight. He's retired twice to come out of retirement twice. As far as I can remember, his contract hadn't expired both times he retired. With him on the UFC 118 card with two weeks to go, it's almost certain he'll fight. But I still consider him retired, sadly. It'll be good to see the old man at it again. -
Sherdog still ranks Randy as a contender, even if he is just outside of the top 10. I don't see him winning a belt anytime soon, but he's still got fight in him. At least to my eyes.
I think he's got the mental capacity to not go out like Liddel did.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.
