Do you listen to music from previous generations?

I grew up in the 70s and 80s, so I'd even consider the Beatles to be from the generation previous to mine. But, I do listen to the Beatles....along with the Beach Boys, Elvis, Roy Orbison, the Stones, the Everly Bros., Motown, Little Richard, Frank Sinatra, and many others....along with my steady diet of Duran Duran, Madonna, Van Halen, Dire Straits, etc.
I hear other people say that they would never listen to such "old music" simply because the music was from "last century"
I suppose it's their lose.

I have music from the civil war all the way up to Lady Gaga in my home, and I listen to it all depending on my mood. If you include the Great Composers in your mix, I have music dating back to the late 14th Century....
I think Joe (hearingimaired) was alive when Stradavarius was still in diapers, and may know some of those guys personally.:D:pThe Gear... If I just listened to music from my "generation" (70's) I'd get bored pretty quick. My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

I listen to music two generations ago. Suck on that Herb Alpert.

Dude, all of those were on my stereo this weekend.
I am a full generation younger than you and therefor the duran etc. where not, and will likely not be on my play list any time soon (short of a dace party request). Nostalgia counts for a lot but good music is just good music! :D:D
So to answer your question: YESSounds good to me... -
Gee John I thought it was F1nut who was the Immortal? 'cause Joe's not much older than I. My father sang Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, etc. He had a complete set of Andres Segovia 78s that ran almost 24/7 on the Victrola and I don't consider myself that old. Do I listen to Goodman, Tito Puente, Cole Porter and all the rest today? Yeah.
And like John I listen to a lot more. It goes without saying that anyone into classical is listening to previous generations. I guess I listen to almost everything. Just wish you young guys would STEER more my way because I can't keep up with all the NEW stuff.

While thats entirely true, older folks lose out just as much by not paying attention to [read: dismissing] anything that's come out after 1988! One just needs to exert a little effort to wade through all of the crap. There's a ton of fantastic stuff out there.
Temporally, my music ranges from Miles Davis' Birth of Cool (1949) up to Arcade Fire's latest release (Aug. 3, 2010)...I suppose I'll eventually get into classical but for now there's just so much good music to keep up with in these times.2 Ch.

Thanks Norm.
Now that I'm back in the U.S. I can ACTUALLY get Pandora so I'll be setting that up and searching for many of your suggestions. And I agree, there is some really good stuff out there...but also A LOT of crap since the 80s--in fact. In my aged opinion I'd say that Indie movements have had greater successs in the 21st century than ever before and that they're having an 'effect'.
One group I liked a few tunes by that I caught online while I was abroad was Gomez? Just picked up a CD. The last groups that amused me because of my heritage were Gogol Bordello and Manu Chao. I also love Cesaria Evora and Virginia Rodriguez. And almost anything from Brazil. And the Dandy Warhols are worth it just for their 'name'.
For a while I was able to get yahoo radio (powered by CBS) and then it got cut off in China? I collected over a dozen groups that I fancied--all recent.

The first song I ever remember hearing on a transistor radio was by the beatles, either i wanna hold your hand or she loves you la la la.
So when i started buying vinyl at thrift stores i started with the beatles and worked my way forwards to.... lets say Duran Duran.
That being said, I bought a Stand Getz / Joao Gilberto album. And since then I've been working my way backwards from '64, collecting and listening to mostly jazz and big band and really enjoying the music.
I've found both shoutcast and last.fm to be excellent sources for discovering both old and new jazz artists.

When I'm driving around with my friends and we want to look extra douchey, we roll down the windows and crank up music from the 80's. What they don't know is that I actually like those songs.
