Had an E8400 2 years ago, ran I think it was...39-41c and up to 45-49c full load using a Thermaltake heatsink. I remember that much cause I never saw past 51-53c. It was my gaming computer.

Did you OC yours at all?

I OC'd mine, upped the voltage as well as changed the timing on my memory and OC'd my video cards.

What paste did you use when you installed the Zalman, and how much of it?

FWIW, i've never been a fan of those Zalman heatsinks, but i don't think it should be the problem, here. Sounds like the install may have been botched.

Ouch, bet you already know this but keep in mind regardless of how many fans you've got in your PC...it's taking air from within the room you're in so that could be a factor as well to consider. I had a small AC in the room I was in.

Hey, I always told ya the Paradigms are simply waiting in my rig until you've got a chance to take them! I plan on returning back to Magnepan speakers anyway so whenever you can swing it let me know! Got the original boxes and everything.

And good call FBM, I've never used Zalman or any other paste for that matter other than the Artic stuff.

When you say "a bit," how much do you mean?

Is the zalman stuff copper, silicone, or silver based? Silicone paste is a waste of time, and i don't like the copper, either.

Order some AS5, make very sure you get both the heatsink and the cores squeeky clean before you install again. Then, on the CORES ONLY, put a small bit of AS5, think like... small grain of rice. Then install heatsink.

I always did a "no-no" and would spread the paste evenly with a credit card over the heatsink with great results in performance, but common wisdom says NOT to do that, so i'd stick with that.

That said, i DID manage to get my old AMD Athlons to idle at dead room temp using that method back when i was into overclocking. (Yes, still on air cooling.)

Those temps aren't too high. I have a E8400 running at 3.8Ghz, temps are 43c and 39c at idle, but I've seen them both go to 50c when encoding, I use an aftermarket heatsink, forget the manufacturer. Computer has never crashed in two years.

I've seen E8400's with stock heatsinks at work run 50c all day long without an issue. Looks like a software issue to me, or maybe a buggy motherboard.

Yeah same, currently in Texas...and that PT Cruiser GT is an automatic. The turbo in it makes the car fun. Tell you all about it later.

FBM, what kind of mouse are you getting? Got me missing my older E8400. Was running Corsair XMS2 ram with dual 8800 GTS SLi'd.

Dual boot, XP as my main and Ubuntu as my alt but I'd run both anyway (Ubuntu on virtual machine) with dual monitors. Now I run an AMD with a 5750 also on dual monitors (Vista and Fedora mainly but sometimes Ubuntu) on my main computer.

running a Xigmatek 1283 I was getting idle temps around 30 degrees and full load video encoding at 55 or so. I changed some things up and am now using a little Rosewill Z300 cooler (basically a simple stock replacement, using the Xigmatek in a different machine), and it is idle around 35 degrees. No overclock.

    Your temps are fine.
At stock speeds, Intel Core CPUs are happy as long as you keep them under 70C. The actual spec that Intel gives is 72.4C, but I'd be a little worried at anything above 65C though.

My Q9550 with a older Zalman flower type cooler and Arctic Silver generally runs around 44-48C at idle on core 1 (environment is usually around 25C). I see 55-58C under heavy encoding loads. The other cores tend to run a few degrees cooler. I've had absolutely no stability issues.

BTW, I wouldn't worry about your AS5 being too old. The stuff is basically very fine silver particles emulsified in an oil paste. How does that go bad? You should make sure you followed the most current Arctic Silver directions for your CPU. They vary a lot depending on the core arrangement, etc.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

No, DDR2 memory will not work on that board.

DDR2 memory is NOT pin-compatible. While both have 240 pins, there's a notch that simply won't fit in the wrong type of slot.

Another option for you might be going the AMD route. If you've already got 240-pin DDR2 667+ DIMMs (ie: desktop RAM, not 200-pin laptop RAM), you can get away with saving $50+ (for me, more like $120-150) by going with an AMD AM2+ motherboard that uses DDR2.

    And, for a processor, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103809 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103851

You'll also want to make sure that your power supply is good enough for the load. A $20 unit simply won't cut it long-term. If you're only planning on running stock (not overclocking), then a power supply such as a Corsair 400CX, Seasonic SS-400ET Bronze, or Antec EA-380D or EA-430D would be great choices.

On a side-note: a Wolfdale processor WILL NOT WORK in an LGA-1366, LGA-1156, or AM2/AM2+/AM3 motherboard. They'll only work in LGA-775 motherboards which have long since been EOL'd (discontinued).
