He's in some pretty elite company. Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sammy Sosa.

Then there were these news stories:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/02/07/alex-rodriguez-steroids/

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3894847

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/articles/2009/02/10/a_rod_admits_steroid_use/

Kinda cheapens the accomplishment.

Then again, Bonds and Sosa were no better.

Hats off to A-Rod. And honestly, I'd bet there were more people using roids than not in the past 15 years in MLB. Certainly cheapens the accomplishment to a certain extent, but I'd expect it to cheapen all accomplishments in the last 15-20 years or so....sort of a "level cheap playing field."

The same can be said for the # of games played now versus # played per season when Ruth/ Mays played.

Either way that's a LOT of dingers.

I actually think Griffey was legit. If he hadn't been hurt so often he might have pushed Hank Aaron's record.

and in all the games I've watched on YES and all the times ESPN interrupted their broadcast to only see him pop up or strike out.....he has the nerve to do this when I'm at work!

With the steroids issue aside, it's still an impressive accomplishment. Let's face it, there are plenty of others on roids that won't come close.....but I agree, it does cheapen it.

Sorry for the dumb question as I really don't follow baseball that much (and so many players have been accused names get mixed up in the process) but did he come out and say he used steroids for a couple years or did he get caught (with proof) and admitted it?

I know either way it was wrong for what he did, but it should be brought down less on a player who came out and said they did so over that time. These **** who deny they did anything should not only be denied the hall of fame, but be obligated to pay back the salary for the time they have evidence they used it. That should have all the players admitting they used steroids so we could end all this ****.

Ok, this last statement could never happen but hey, you think of a better idea!:p

Not to nit pick, but Griffey didn't use steroids. I would not lump him in with those other two.

Agreed, if Griffey was using steroids, you can pretty much guarantee that he wouldn't have spent as much time injured. Given the tear he was on to begin his career, if he had used steroids and stayed healthy, his stats would be astronomical.

They all do what they have to win as a team, or succeed as individuals.
Pro sports is full of rotten SOB's. At least the only one he's hurting in the
    long run is himself.
We watch and are entertained. He hits the ball a lot=excitement.
Is that good or bad for the sport?

Either way, I stopped watching many years ago after the 1994-95
strike. Same with hockey.Unless I'm playing, I'm not interested.

I stopped in the summer of 1992, when Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrebeck of the World Series Champion Minnesota Twins told my 7 year old nephew they could no sign his baseball cards because it was to close to gametime as one of them looked at their 100k Rolex. I used the scoreboard clock to see the time and it said we still had a three hour wait!

Getting paid MILLIONS to play a childs game and then to have no time or respect for a child cut it for me.

I think it's a been pretty well established that Ruth was on hot dogs most of his career, so I don't know about that.
