Antec Low Profile Component Cooler Installed - Just Okay

Nice looking piece of equipment that I purchased to cool my NAD T955 with the understanding it only moves 5 to 8cfm of air. I rationalized that because it sits on top of (and mostly covers) the amp, it would be sufficient to evacuate the heat from the power amp's less-than-one cubic foot interior dimension.

And it did work very well when playing two channel music, but when all five channels were lit up for movies the fan was overmatched at either its 5 or 8cfm settings.

With the clear focus of hindsight I've determined that since the fan nearly covers the amp's top it then prevents the heat from rising naturally (duh) from the unit and relies only on the two fans for cooling and they are simply overmatched by the NAD's heat output. End result, no gain.

Before leaving for work this morning I relocated the fan to the top of the Onkyo 707. Since its "internal organs" are now bypassed and runs fairly cool, I'm hoping this fan will be more effective there though not really necessary.

Will determine its effectiveness on the Onkyo tonite but this thing may end up being the newest resident of my electronic museum, aka, the garage.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was thinking about getting one but know I'll have to reconsider...

+1 There was also someone that mentioned purchasing some of the items from these guys: http://www.coolerguys.com/

I specifically liked this option, doesnt look nearly as polished as the Antec, but might work better, who knows...http://www.coolerguys.com/ccstandk.html

    Dave,

Did you locate the fan over the quadrant nearest the HDMI interfaces on the ONK?

George - At about halfway thru The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo the Onkyo is running very cool under the Antec. I was never convinced the Onkyo was running hot with all channels being passed thru to the NAD and actually bought the Antec for the NAD. Would say at this point if you're looking to cool your Onkyo (is it running hot?), this Antec may provide.

If you're looking to cool your XPA5 ... not so sure.

Kevin - No idea! This Antec fan is almost exactly the same size as the Onkyo and in my cabinet can really only fit squarely on the top. The fan intakes are at about the 'mid point' of the unit.

Again, the Onkyo hasn't run hot at all (with all 5 channels being passed thru to the amp) but it feels even less warm under the fan.

Actually I was thinking about it for the Onkyo. It runs hotter than the power amp. I think I've read that the heat is caused by the video circuits especially if you have "immediate display" turned on which I do. Now I may have to reconsider reconsidering...

And someday I hope to be wise enought to heed the advice I seek.:o

In the meantime, well, I have a pretty darn big garage ... but seriously, the Antec for me was about a 'must try' because of the massive effort (and 3 friends) it takes to get my HT/Stereo cabinet off the wall for rear access.

Will definitely acquire a cabinet exhaust system and next time I can get back there will do the install.

My next 'learning' will be using an infra red thermometer to actually measure component temps. Will let you know what happens.
