My wife wants something like one of these Nook / Kindle things. I honestly have no desire to look into these things. A girl at my work loves here Nook so I'll most likely get my wife one of those.

Go for the 1st gen Ipad, prices are relatively cheap. So much more to do on it also. Food for thought my friend.

I can't stand to read. The only way I could read a book is if it was one of the audio books. :)

Same here. I like the audio books with pictures. I think they have another name for them though.

Yup, and publishers have been fighting it ever since ereaders took off! They are going to have to learn the same hard lesson the same way music companies did with mp3s.

I played with both the Nook and the Kindle a little. My wife bought herself a Kindle and got a Nook for her mom (she practically lives in Barnes and Noble). Her mom isn't super tech savvy, so we got it all set up before giving it to her. My take was that if I just wanted a barebones reader to replace paperbacks and newsprint type periodicals, I'd go with the Kindle, but the interface (especially the keyboard and little Dpad) is really klunky. The Nook's touchscreen is pretty nice, no trouble reading it indoors, battery life doesn't compare to the eInk readers. Mom loves it. I think it's a little bit of overkill if what you're consuming is 99% text.

I have a kindle 2 (current flavors out now are 3rd generation), and I love it. When they come out with a 4th generation one I might just buy it for the upgrade and give away the kindle I have now.

Thanks for that link, Cfizz, for ebooks/prices.

Looked up some titles, and .... for me, it's still cheaper to buy at Barnes & Noble.

"In the Courts of the Sun", Brian D'Amato:
    ebook: $12.99 ebooks.com
    Pulp: $ 5.99 B & N

Of course, that $5.99 is from B & N's "Clearance" section and you do have to run the gauntlet of "Sir, may we interest you in a Nook ?" (misheard that question the first time and almost got banned from B & N ).

I like paper in my hands. Dinosaur, but I like to make notes, underline, put notations on the inner jacket, etc.

Wife has the Nook and loves it. She takes it everywhere. She loves the free book Friday's. We debated Kindle vs. Nook and ultimately she chose the Nook. She likes the color screen and that she can read it in the dark. She doesn't like the Kindle's screen refresh "flash". She can even borrow eBooks from the local library while at home. That is pretty cool.

The iPad is a nice solution but it was way more at the time.

BTW, this is post 1000 for me! Woohoo!

I just bough the kindle for $114 from amazon and I think its great .Downloading books is easy and there is a great selection of free books available on amazon .The best feature is that I sign into amazon then download it there and it transfers the data striaght to my kindle in seconds

A few thoughts now that I've own one since Xmas.
First, if I could do it again, I would buy the 3G version just to be able to browse Amazon and their 'newsletter' anywhere.
Secondly, i love how long the battery last.
    Third, it's horrible for magazines.
And lastly, I rarely use it. It sits on my nightstand most of the time because I mostly use my Kindle for iPhone even though I hate the small screen. The Kindle network does do a very good job of synching among multiple devices.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would do well with a Nook or iPad just because I don't like carrying stuff around. Maybe one day when I buy a messenger bag...

No kindle for me. I debated awhile about the different readers and pads. I didn't want just a reader and the iPad was just too big to carry around. I compromised when I got a great deal on a Samsung Galaxy Tab (the older 7" version).

This size seems to make it pretty comfortable for reading and doing other things. It's also not to big to throw in my existing computer bag or back pocket. I haven't decided if I will get a 3g data plan for it yet. It would be nice but for now I seem to get everything I need to get done with wi-fi.

I have been interested in the tablets for awhile and I do like having one. When my phone contract expires in March next year, I'll be taking a look around then to see what tablet is out there for upgrading. Hopefully, the HP 7" Opal will be out by then. The android operating system is nice, but I prefer the ease and multitasking ability of WebOS.
