I am going to make a purchase real soon for a preamp. I bought a B & K ST3030 ( 2 channel 200wpc amp) off of ebay, it should drive my sda's just fine. I went to a local well respected high end stereo shop and was nearly sold on a basic tube preamp made by Antique Sound Labs. It sounded good and is within my budget. Any opinions on ASL or a tube solid state set up for a 2 channel rig.

    scott,
Congrats on baggin' your B&K amp. At 200 wpc I should say it'll do your 2's right... and you got it at a decent price to boot.

Don't know the ASL line personally, but have read some good things. Tube pre- with SS power amp is not an approach I'd take, but if it sounds good to you...

If you can't audition the ASL at home, drag your B&K into the dealer and fire it up there.
    More later,
    Tour...

I use an Anthem PRE 2L SE tube preamp with a Parasound HCA 1500A (205 wpc) power amp for my Maggies. The combo gives you the smoothness of tubes with the dynamic power to drive any speaker. You can tailor the sound by rolling the tubes to fit your taste. Preamp tubes last longer and cost less than power amp tubes.
My local dealer has ASL gear. Very nice sounding gear, not euphonic sounding at all. Heard the ASL Hurricanes driving the Spendor SP100 speakers, very open and very dynamic.

Tour, I too thought that was a decent price, I was willing to go to 500 but I'll take it at 391. It should arrive tuesday the 17th. That puts the pressure on me to get a pre. I appreciate your comment about the tube pre SS amp combo but I have to try it. I can always do something different later. There is another tube pre on ebay for 399 by philly audio that byteme wrote an awesome review on. It looks good too. I can demo it for 2 weeks and if not satisfied return it, If it sounds good before 2 weeks is up then it can only get better. The problem with that is I have to frikkin wait for it instead of picking up the ASL tomorrow.
Tony, This would be my first tube expierience and I like the idea of being able to get different sound with different tubes. Byteme has already offered to hook me up with the guy he got his tungsol tubes from for the philly, he likes the sound with the tungsols. Set of 4 for $40, not bad imho.
