Fans.
We had one attic fan, mushroom style, but have replaced it three times in ten years.
So, I went to the big box store and bought the mac daddy (biggest CFM, thermostat and humidistat ), and mounted it at the end of our ranch home, and above where the AC unit/central unit sits outside ( hopefully helping to move that air too). The internal mounted location, basically, at the top of the triangle shaped vents found on ranch style homes.
It was literally 120 degrees the other day on the attic floor, later creeping up to 140, when I started to work on it. ( many, many breaks as it is too hot to work in 125 and up ). Those temperatures were with the one fan we had. I have heard of hotter attics in my research, and as North as Boston too.
Now, with two attic fans going, and not all the time either now....
Today, going up to clean up, it was 98 degrees.
As long as you have the soffit vents to accommodate the air flow, or increased air flow, it is good to keep the attic just slightly above ambient temperature.
I also followed that up with more "inside the living area" fans, three more, two on the ceiling ( hallway cute little 24 inch fan and an Art Deco funky fan in the LR ) and another portable unit, the Lasko shaped like a tiny square. The Lasko, has plug ins and cost about 50 dollars and when it blew over another unit I was looking at, I knew I had to have that one.
Running a fan is so much cheaper than having your AC unit run all night and day just trying to keep up with the heat of the day.
Hope this helps someone save some money.
I can give more detail to those that want it, model numbers, square footage, whatever...
