tweeter circuit bypass

Hi, I have an extra crossover board for my RTI A5 towers and I am considering changing the electrolytics to polypropylenes. I've read that most people prefer to leave the bypass caps out of the crossover after the electrolytics have been replaced with "quality" polypropylenes. Would Dayton 1% caps be considered quality caps or would they benefit from Sonicap bypasses? I would use Sonicaps all around, but they cost about twice as much as the Daytons.

Also is there a big difference between the 1% daytons and the run of the mill 5% daytons? The A5 crossover has a 27mfd capacitor in the circuit for the mid-woofers. Would going with a 12+15mfd dayton 5% be better than going with a 25mfd dayton 1%?

Other than being closer to the original specification, would having two smaller capacitors parallel change the sound characteristics vs having one cap of the same value (hypothetical example would be a single 20mfd cap vs 2*10mfd caps of the same quality)?

Sorry for the long winded post. There just so much to learn about this hobby and so little money to spend

Replace the bypass and electrolytic in series with the tweeter with a single cap. When using a single high quality cap, a bypass cap is no longer needed. Also do yourself and use a Claritycap or Sonic Cap on the tweeter instead of a Dayton cap, it's well worth the extra couple of dollars.

The regular 5% Dayton caps are usually pretty close in tolerance. As for the 27uf, either split the value in half or use a single cap. Using different values can have a negative effect on sound quality. A single 25uf will be within 10% and should be ok.

Thank you for the replies. You've convinced me to go with sonicaps for the tweeter circuit. As for replacing the caps+bypass with a cap of the same value is it worth doing if the caps are:

    10mfd+.22mfd (RTiA5 tweeter)
    12mfd+.22mfd (RTiA5 tweeter)
    10mfd+.47mfd (CSi5 tweeter)

Would there be a noticeable change in the crossover point if I went with plain 10mfd and 12mfd caps? They would be within 5% of the spec.

    Thanks again :)

    No, you would be fine.

When I purchased by A5s I noticed that the sound from one speaker was slightly more detailed than the other. I contacted Polk customer service and they suggested that I swap the drivers and if the issue followed the cabinet and not the drivers that it was a crossover issue. It worked out to be different brand capacitors on the crossovers. Polk CS sent me a new crossover and the sound balanced out after installation (Polk CS is awesome). The experience made me wonder if going from one set of electrolytic caps to another set of electrolytics could noticeably improve the amount of detail coming from the speakers, what would film caps do to the sound quality?

I am not doing it because I am not satisfied with the sound of my speakers. I am doing it to see how much more potential they have.

I emailed my order to SonicCraft at around 1:30AM on 7/29 and I am still waiting for my quote. I hope that they can ship it out to me before they close shop for their move.

Give them a couple of days, they'll get back to you before the move.

Someone crashed into their building last Monday and they've had a lot of orders lately,
so they're probably still a little behind.
Give them a call tomorrow and they'll pull up your order and finalize it over the phone.
Maybe the sale discount (which expired 7/30) will still be honored since you emailed
    them on 7/29.
I emailed them for an order on 7/23 and called them on 7/27 when I hadn't gotten a reply,
and my stuff arrived 7/30 (and is now in my Polk Monitor 10a crossovers - installed yesterday).

Thanks guys. I called them this morning and they managed to send me a quote within 2 minutes of the end of the call. The gentleman on the other end of the line also said that they would probably ship it out before their move. The sale prices were honored :)

If you haven't already received you're quote or called them yet--do so today. After today they are closed for relocation until Aug 23rd.
