Earlier this month, Mostafaei told CNN that his client confessed to the crime after being subjected to 99 lashes with a whip. She later recanted the confession and has denied wrongdoing, he said.

Geez after 99 lashes I would admit to planning the attack on Pearl Harbor, JFK's assassination and the attack on the World Trade center. Man it sounds like the Spanish Inquisition over there. Scary!

This thread is a bit "toungue-in cheek", and I can appreciate that, but the things that actually happen in Iran are no laughing matter. Watch "The Stoning of Soria M" or "For Neda". Even grown men weep openly after witnessing the barbarian mentality of the leaders of this country.

I know all to well just how evil the government of Iran is. We should have wiped them out rather than Iraq.

Is Iran the country where if a woman was raped, it was her fault?

No, really. I remember reading about that and I was totally blown away.

The administration in Iran is so full of balony ALL THE TIME!!! The say what the world wants to hear then do whatever it is they please. They are sitting on a huge lake of oil which would last them for centuries but need nuclear power!!! Cut me a break. They really have a low opinion of the intelligence of the world at large.

John your wife is Persian isn't she? I bet she has some horror stories espcially since Ayatollah Khomeini took power although I heard that things under the Shah weren't that great either but anything is better than the barbaric ways and laws they are imposing.

:eek::eek: I would think toppling the current regime of imams and their goofy president and letting the people decide on the type of government they want would be the way to go.

However, every Friday after mid-day prayers since Ayatollah Khomeini they have rallys chanting, "death to America!" So one has to wonder what the people who've grown up with that and only know that are really thinking.

Yes, she is. She was born in the midst of the revolution in 1979. She lived with the horrors of war during the Iran/Iraq war... Bombs destroyed much of her home and killed friends and family. During her high school days, she had friends that were grabbed from the streets in front of her for showing to much ankle or hair, and a sister accused of adultery... for the crime of HOLDING HANDS!!!

Her father was VERY wealthy and able to bribe his daughter's accusers into forgetting about it, but for those of lesser means, it could have meant being put in jail for a very long time, or much worse.

My father-in Law has taken me to be his son because he knows that his family has no stronger guardian than I, and I would die to protect them. There is a big piece missing from my understanding of her though. It means the world to me that I fully understand her childhood and the places and events that have made her the brilliant woman she is,(she chose me after all:D) but if my wife and I were to go there together in the current environment, she would be killed for being with an infidel, and I would simply be made to disappear.

I DO NOT want what I say next to become political and I hope everyone will grant me the leeway here because of my closeness to this issue, but never in my life have I been embarassed to be an American. Those days of unrest in Tehran last year, when our Government turned their eyes away from those souls crying out for freedom was as offensive to me as anything I have ever witnessed. All they needed from us was to be told that the rest of the world believes their cause to be just and the world would have changed for the better. The Devil has an address, and his home is in Sunny Downtown Tehran, and we allowed him to keep his throne at the expense of freedom.

There were moderates within the Iranian power structure that were intent on using the cover of the war with Iraq to overthrow the regime in Tehran, and it was those elements that we were dealing with. When the back-door elements were exposed by the New York Times as I remember, those elements were KILLED and those in the administration had egg on their face.

It was a TOP SECRET plan that if it were seen to completion, would have completely changed history in the Middle East. This is purely speculative, but such a change would have perhaps prevented much of what has come since, including the WTC attacks. But then again the NewYork Times has never seen a Top Secret document as unfit to print.

I do not nessesarily agree with the tactics used in the Iran-Contra affair, but I do understand the goals and the purpose for it. Thank God for Ollie North!

I think that may be a little revisionist...There has been not one shred of evidence that is what was going on. It was arms for hostages all day long.

We were supplying Iran and Iraq in their war against each other. Quit thinking these politicians are some kinda noble heroes..and especially North, he discredited the Corps.

It always amazes me when people take such a simplistic viewpoint to politics and actually make light of what is happening around the world. Exactly the reason why political discussions are not allowed here.

No... because subjects like politics,religion,guns...entice such a robust debate,it almost allways turns ugly. Makeing light of political matters is a way of not getting a thread closed, not because of some simplistic view of the world. It's basically the PC world we live in. Polk owns this board, sets the rules, plenty of other internet joints to stress political views. Though I must admit,I frequently break this rule myself, I still understand the reasoning behind it.

All you know is what you were exposed to via the media. The media was also clueless as to the real facts in the issue. Deliberately fed information made up the "face" of the investigation. The real facts will eventually be released via the Freedom of Information Act.
You have little IF any knowledge of what really went on in the Iran/Contra television debacle.
As far as Col. North's part in all of this....Let's just say he perfomed a mission as ordered. As does any good Marine.
Don't always take things at face value.
You are NOT "in the know" and only the "Powers that be" have the full knowledge of the actual mission, tactics, and results.
We as Americans expect results and really have no desire to know the means it takes to achieve these results. Be it humane or not it is sometimes necessary to stray from our perceived "good guy" personna we're brainwashed to see ourselves in.

Uh ok, so YOU have the real facts? You have no idea of my background or what clearances I have or had and who I worked for. And good Marines don't take blind orders when they contradict law. I know, I was one. It's called refusing an unlawful order.
I have taken nothing at face value. And don't recite the new NeoCon mantra of performing results against the "good guy personna" as you call it.
