Arcade Fire - The Suburbs

Been listening to Arcade Fire's new album, The Suburbs, on repeat this evening.
Wow...this one is great. Powerful, fresh sounding, and bursting with energy. I do like their first two records quite a bit, but they have really outdone themselves with this one, surpassing Funeral and Neon Bible. More light/less darkness. And this one is solid as a rock.
Best new album I've heard in quite some time...and thats just after a couple of listens.

I love Arcade Fire and have Funeral and Neon Bible on LPs. zombie boy 2000 (Jason) turned me on to them a couple of years ago. I'll have to save up for this new one. Norm, have you heard anything by "The Shins?" They are another good recent band.
-
And I'm going to see them in a little over a week. If you can in any way do this, I HIGHLY recommend it. Probably one of the best live bands ever. If you don't believe me, feel free to youtube any of their performances.
I thought The Suburbs was due out August 2nd?I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -

Yes, a friend turned me on to The Shins back around fall 2002. Fantastic band. I picked up Oh, Inverted World and Chutes Too Narrow around that time and then Wincing The Night Away later (the latter is probably still my favorite). Speaking of, they seem to be overdue for a release. Wincing came out in January 2007, I think.
Since you spin vinyl Joe, wanted to let you know that the lp of the new Arcade Fire will actually be released a few days before the CD version. The vinyl will be out this Friday (July 30).2 Ch.

Sounds great. Where will you see them?
They will be streaming the Madison Square Garden Show (August 5) on youtube.

You're right; this thing doesn't come out officially until next week on CD. However, there are "advance copies" floating around.... I'll pick up a proper CD when its released because this is just that good. In the meantime, I couldn't hold back, especially after reading the following review in BBC Music, where they opine that this is their OK Computer (and possibly better).

I'll be seeing them in Atlanta in general admission. Consider me front and center. Their shows have an energy that I really have never encountered before. And I've been to hundreds and hundreds of shows.
Sonically... it's absolutely stellar. As you can tell, they're all top notch musicians. However, it's their performance that takes everything to an almost unheard of level. And to see 'em, they never really do the same thing twice. Win Butler might work his way into the crowd. You can count on the "roaming percussionist" to work his magic on assorted items on the stage (as well as on bandmates). There's just so much to see and hear that it truly becomes a magical experience.
I really wish I had seen 'em on tour when they were hitting the most off-beat venues imaginable. An elevator. A theater lobby. And somehow they can always pull it off. For something so often huge and anthemic, it is ALWAYS intimate.
They truly are of the greatest bands to come along in quite a while. And here I am just stuck being jealous because I have to wait another week.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. I have a hard time trying to figure out which of the two, Chutes Too Narrow or Wincing the Night Away I like better. One time I'll listen to one and thing, "yea this is it" another time I'll play to other and "no this is it!"
Thanks for heads up about the vinyl release of Arcade Fire. -
I think it's a hard call between all three of those albums. I would probably have to give the nod to Chutes Too Narrow for nostalgic reasons. That album just happened to come out at the perfect time in my life. I can't help but grin ear to ear whenever it's playing - no matter what's going on in my life.I never had it like this where I grew up. I think at this moment even with my rig down I have to agree with you.
Jason, did we ever discuss the 'Decemberists?' My son bought me "The Cranes Wife" a couple of Christmases ago and it is a great double LP.

Norm you should check them out, they are another of the recent bands that just do it for me. -
I love that band as well. Actually... Demi got me turned on to 'em. Talk about another fantastic live band.

Wow, well done guys. The Shins, Arcade Fire, and The Decemberists are fantastic. I'm glad to hear the new Arcade Fire album is on par with their previous stuff (I've yet to give it a listen). The Decemberists played at The Tabernacle a while ago and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to. Plus that's the best venue in the Southeast. Though, The Fillmore opened a venue in Charlotte NC and that place has great acoustics/atmosphere as well. Hey, I just checked and they're not coming anywhere on the West Coast during the 2010 tour. From the eastern seaboard straight to Europe...bummer.
I did find a concert from the Neon Bible tour that was webcast/recorded for NPR's All Songs Considered (Judson Memorial Church, Feb. 17, 2007). Its in low resolution (mp3) but at least its something for those of us who can't see them this time around. One can download it after clicking on the following link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7273765
Also the new record is streaming at Grooveshark.com. Click here to get a low-resolution preview before the official release (which will sound much better in full lossless resolution of course): http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/album/The+Suburbs/44818592 Ch.

Almost sounds like a mashup of a few things.
Yeah, there is even a little Blondie - "Heart of Glass" in there. And this is no slight against MGMT -- I saw them open for Beck and Spoon a few years back and they were a lot of fun -- but the new album by Arcade Fire is really held together by a central theme, driving force that I failed to find on MGMT's debut. I think there's kind of a sense of loss or sadness (at least of being troubled with something) that is threaded throughout the songs on The Suburbs. In an age when the "hit single" has achieved a level of dominance not seen since the pre-Sergeant Peppers / Piper at the Gates of Dawn era, these guys have consciously made an album. Its definately not a downer album but as someone who is in their mid-30s and has gone back to one's hometown periodically since moving on in the mid 90s, I feel this one strikes a particular chord. They've gone back and revisited their old stomping grounds, family, neighborhood, circle of friends and have found that things have kind of fallen apart (and been reconstructed in new ways) and were not as their good/childhood memories (i.e. sense of nostalgia) would suggest. The image of the Suburbs as this unstoppable, sprawling and monstrous force serves as a good metaphor I think. Its more of a comment than a critique, though (which I find far more palatable).
I find the music on Funeral and Neon Bible to be more arresting, but lyrically and conceptually I think this one draws me in further. Just my take so far...2 Ch.

Yeah, I say we nominate HI to be the official spokesperson for new music every time some old dude or dudette comes in here and says all music from the 80s onward sucks. I don't have a problem with 60s and 70s tunes (this era is broadly represented in my collection) but anybody who says that no or very little good music has come out over the past 30 years is living in a state of ignorance...they just haven't bothered to look or, rather, to listen. And I dare say that the best from these decades can go toe to toe with just about anything from the 60s and 70s.2 Ch.

All anyone has to do take a listen to the new music put out today. Some of it is truly garbage but then you have the good stuff and it is really good; groundbreaking, innovative, unique. I would say more so now than back in the '70s. The point is there are some tremendously talented bands out there that I've never heard of and when brought to my attention jump right on them.
BTW No-one mentioned Maroon 5, another great band.
Jason do you remember this;
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showpost.php?p=599062&postcount=50
Back in the day, it was only $2.00 to buy and LP. If it was good or great music, wonderful, if it was crap, then you were only out two bucks but you could easily find a good song or two on it. I used to buy several LPs a week and at $2.00 a pop I could take a chance on anything that I've not heard of.
Today, I depend on guys like Jason and Norm as well as my 27 year old son to point me in the right direction because LPs today are atleast 10 1/2 times more than they used to be and that is just for regular pressings. Audiophile pressings are off the charts dollar wise. -
Picked the album up today on release day. I have not done that for awhile, at least their were no crowds or lineups! (lol)
This release has the coupon for the digital download and am listening to that right now. Nice pace and more of an upbeat tempo then their last 2. They sound more relaxed and a little bit more polished and the album flows well song to song. It is good, but I think I like Funeral a lot better. They sounded more angry on Funeral and all over the place! -
