Cripes, I was on I-696 here in Michigan a couple days ago going about 75 mph through this construction zone where there were cement barricades on both sides. Three lanes of heavy, fast traffic and only a couple feet of shoulder to the right and to the left.
I'm in the fast lane and what do I see? Four baby ducks in the middle of the lane in front of me. WTF? I didn't have time to think, went into full 2 feet on the brakes ABS stop. I would have creamed them like some bowling pins or something.
So they run off to the left side by the concrete barrier and I take off. I was looking for a place to pull over to shoo them off the freeway but I realized the construction zone was long and there was no place to pull over so I kept going.
Seeing them trapped out there like that was just heartbreaking but I had to know what happened so I went back. I remembered exactly where it was and was fully expecting to see 4 feathery bodies pasted to the freeway. But I saw nothing, not a damn thing. :D
The only thing I can think of was after I jammed on the brakes, everything really slowed down and maybe some other cars stopped and shoo'ed them off the freeway.
I still can't figure out for the frickin' life of me how they got out there to begin with. I also can't figure out how the freeway was running so smooth with them out there. They must have been smart enough to have been hugging that concrete barrier pretty tight.

Kudos to you for at avoiding the ducklings and actually making an attempt to rescue them. I understand that it is often unavoidable to not hit an animal when they are on a busy street or highway...and it is more important to not cause a serious accident than to avoid an animal. But what you did was cool!
I'll never forget driving to work one morning and seeing a box turtle crossing the road. There was no where to stop to get it off the road and I just hoped it made it across. A truck passed me going the opposite direction and as I looked in my mirror, the driver intentionally swerved to run over and crush the turtle. I know it was just a turtle but it was totally unnecessary and pointless. I'm sure the guys in the truck were laughing their asses off thinking how cool they were.

Always stop and help turtles off the road if I see them, even the big snappers.
Helped a few cats in distress (2 now live with us). But that's just me :o

That split decision to save an animal or cause an accident is a terrible feeling.
BTW, the guy that ran over the turtle was a complete and utter jerk off.
