One second too late.
I don't ever recall that yellowish brownish tint to them though. -
SL1000 of course, though it looks like it was from a smoker's house or from flood damage or something (I'm not an expert--but they look like crap. The domes might have yellowed a bit, but nowhere near that badly).polkaudio Monitor 5 Series II

Hold on. It is a SL1000 faceplate but the magnet is from a Denmark made Peerless. The 7514___ tells us this. Someone replaced the faceplate. Easy to do if you get the gap right. keith

Keith....you think too much. It's an SL1000 for all intents and purposes. I've seen the same things you have in my travels. Just because the numbers don't make sense....don't lose your head.
I've owned by the book RTA12C, that were drivered RTA12...figure that one out.
The Monitor and RTA series is the worst series to try and nail down consistency. That's why it's been so hard to work up a Compendium....hint hint.
MarkCTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Some of the SL-1000 were labeled 7514___. The dome is a give away. It is definitely not the Peerless silk dome that we know and love.
Compendium for Monitors and RTAs, mmmm... Sounds like something I've been working on.

I don't believe there's any confusion between the SL1000 and the Peerless....unless I missed something. I digress, as I've read the SL1000 being confused in typed speech in regards to the Peerless. But most certainly not in regards to a physical or visual inspection and/or picture.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? I am telling you guys, the faceplate has been switched.
One big clue (besides the numbers)is the screws are philips. They look chewed ups to?? The SL1000s all came with allen head screws.
Polk stopped using the Denmark made tweeters in 1980 The SL1000s did not come out until late 82. The 7514 ___denotes Denmark .. ANYTHING 5514___ denotes US made units
The last two numbers are the year it was made. It looks like 1980 to me. That is two years before the SL1000 was even out.
I have switched enough magnets around and can tell you the sound of the tweeter changes.
Bottomline. These are SL1000 faceplates with 1980 Denmark made peerless magnets and screws. Would I lie to you??? keith -

I'm just curious--I didn't think faceplates (on these tweeters at least) were so interchangeable.polkaudio Monitor 5 Series II

The dome is not Peerless that was used in Polk speakers. Are the front and back photos of the same tweeter?Stan

I certainly have not seen all concerning Polk, however, all the SL-1000 tweeters that I have seen have a sticker on the back. It appears that the sticker was removed. I don't know what may have been stamped on the plate under the sticker.
Also all the Denmark Peerless tweeters that I have seen have smooth machined plates (with the exception of the more modern version) vs the textured plate shown. Most of the USA Peerless are textured as is the SL-1000. However, I haven't seen an SL-1000 with flat edges on the plate. The original Denmark Peerless has flats while the USA are round.

My guess is that it is an early Polk developed replacement for the Denmark Peerless (early SL-1000, possibly a prototype ?) .

I did a photographic overlay of a SL-1000 on top of a Peerless. It looks from the top that the faces could be interchangeable. The screws and lead lines look to line up. However, the dome still isn't right for a Peerless. It also looks a little odd for an SL-1000 but much closer. I still think prototype or early SL-1000.Stan

I have changed or adjusted more then 20 of them. You just have to make sure and get the VC gap right. Takes 3 minutes. keith

I'm backing Keith on this. It would be simple to exchange diaphragm's i.e. face plates. I always wondered why Polk did not make theirs like some of the Peerless tweeters that you can buy new diaphragms for when you toast a voice coil.
I recently had a SL1000 go bad all of a sudden one minute it was playing fine the next it made wierd sounds but played. I turned off the juice looked it over noticed the diaphragm was a little rippled near the top. Next day I went to play the SDA's and no sound out of the tweeter. I bought a spare used SL1000 from a well known forum member. I had taken the old SL1000 face plate allen screws out and noticed something that we have talked about plenty here on the forum, but happening to woofers and NOT tweeters and that is magnet shift. After you take out the 4 screws the face plate and diaphragm will come right off. In my case the center magnet had come unglued and attached itself to the top of the outer ring magnet pinching the voice coil. If not for the death grip of those two magnets the face plate and VC would of lifted right off. I think in time we may hear more about the tweeter magnets coming unglued and shifting making your tweeter useless. At this time i do not know of any way to stop this like the JB weld fix for woofers

The center item is the pole piece. I had one tweeter that I managed to get all 4 pieces realigned but it took and hour of **** around Not worth it.
