    Thanks guys.
I will try out the question on question approach. Also, I will go in today and thanks him for the interview, and tell him I look forward to being apart of his team. That way I show confidence, and gratitude for the time he has offered to me.

That wouldn't be to far of an idea cstmar01. If it is not a hassle, I wouldn't mind.
But if the tom hopkins book is the book to go.
It is fairly cheap as well, to my surprise. Perhaps the bookstore will have it.
    Thanks again.

All good. I'll try and shoot him an email when I'm on my lunch today. The only thing is I'm not sure what he's up to this summer as he tends to travel a lot back and forth between WI and CA as he had a real estate company out there that he ran, so it might take a week or so for me to get a response back. I know I had the list in my papers from the class, however where those ended up after I graduated I have no idea :o

LETTER!!! Getting anxious won't pay off, just keep in mind you have nothing to loose and everything to gain! You are selling your self and like any sale, you may be fruitfull once out of 10 but that 10th one is the one that pays off. Don't either discard any refusal as it is a learning process, I don't believe in failure as so called failure are life learning which will lead you to success! Never get discourage, anxious or despair, always take even the NOs as challenges and experience. If you think failure you will generate failure. Trust your self, have confidence in your self and go for it. Keep in mind that a job you do not get was simply not met for you and there is better out there awaiting for you ;)

Some people get upset over it, especially if they experience it negatively from someone else in their life. Typically the middle to upper middle class get upset on that one.

    Technokid says some good stuff.

I applied for Circuit City when I was 16 - the guy said I knew far to much to work there.

A couple of months later I landed the job I am at now five years later and am pretty much as high as I can go without being part owner...

This is a valid point - but the only time this can be taken the wrong way is when someone sounds like an **** with their question. Which alot of pushy, desperate salesman give off that vibe.

Do you have a DVD player? DO You neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed a DVD player?

I mean cmon - of course someones gonna be pissed.

If you had asked - Ah, what are you guys looking to plug the DVD player up to? Thats a fairly simple question and it gets you to know a little more about their setup. And you can then follow up with "Oh, judging by your TV I guess you guys are looking for a higher quality image and sound?" (Who will say no to that?) "Yes" "Oh, well have you guys ever heard of Blu Ray?" "No" "Really, wow - well it is a disc just like DVD and blah blah blah

Questions should have meaning and ultimately lead you back to closing the deal.

I like to ask questions I can reiterate -- so if at the end of the sale if they kind of are basking on what to do...

"You like the way it feels yes?" "yes" "You like the way it looks, yes?" "yes" "you like the way it sounds, yes?" "yes"

Get em to say alot of yeses, you can pretty much pick the item up and take it to the counter and start asking for info.

I have done that on several ocassions.

    Yup.

Sometimes people want **** that doesnt even do what they want it to do. If you dont ask the questions and sell them the **** they want but doesnt do what it is supposed to. You just went from a salesman to an ****.

On the flip side if you ask questions, you then can become the guy they always want to talk to because you have their interest at hand!

    Incredible.

Treat sales the way you want to be treated when you walk in a store and you should be fine.

Also - when you suggest product have a plan and stick to it -- and never offer to many options...

TO many options = thinking, thinking = gotta think about it

Someone is looking for a TV, ask questions that peg you to two TVs - never a third one. That third one = thinking.

Another tip I can give you is some people cant think for themselves. Sometimes when they have to think they want to ask someone if it is a good deal. How about at that moment in time you confidently tell them "This is a great deal!"

You might be surprised what that does.

When doors shut, there are usually a good reason for it and if you listen to the message life sends you it is usually to your benefit.

I agree, like anything else you don't want to over do such. The main goal is to generate active listening, confirming what the client said, getting to fully understand his needs, making sure you meet his requirement and potentially offer alternatives. Mainly LISTENING is the key, the Q & A simply assure client that you are listening and care but you don't want to be anoying.
Right, you would want to know what they have, so you could offer then what they do not have.....
exactly but furthermore what they need. I don't sell fridge to Eskimos (if you get my driff) but I'll make sure I don't miss and offer just about everything that they need. They don't think about it but on many occasions it is a wake up call for them when I ask them if they will need such and such (I'm in rental services by the way)
    Yup.

This part of your post is so important, EDUCATE! You have to know your stuff, not like a brained washed salemens but like a specialist in your field which is eager to help and provide specific products for specific clients, TAYLORED for them! Such attitude will definitely lead the client to come back to YOU since he respects and trust both your knowledge and integrity, YOU have HIS best at HEART (PASSION, PASSION!!!!).

Do not want to go off topic but Vr3MxStyler2k3, do you deal much with operation managers and if so, have you ever noticed their antagonism toward good salemens? A good salesmen generate $$$$ for the company but at the same time generates work at all level and it seems like operation managers hate you for doing so

From what I understand you are in home electronics sale, am I right? If so, what are your comments? I was thinking of potentially moving that route but was afraid of downgrading in both pay and challenge... any comments?

haha - I sell musical instruments - so things are a little different. Unfortunately I do not have any experience working with an operational manager. My main job at the moment is not sales, but to make sure staffs at both stores are prepped and ready - each store has products and special orders are handled in a timely manner.

I sale in my spare time and sometimes still end up top salesman ;) ( I keed I keed)

    .
I don't usually buy protection plans. The advantage of such is for store mega profit margins but for the client, the advantage is maybe 1% (the odd case where the gear prematurely fails). When I get the protection it is usually because it is provided free or nearly. I did give in once for my dishwasher and the main reason is I was sick of taking the old built in dishwasher out fo repair and it was nearly free. Time has passed and protection is no longer and of course the product never failed.

BTW, if I was forced to sell protection-extended warranty I would more likely fail my employersince as I mentioned I don't sell fridges to Eskimos. I strongly feel you have to believe in what you sell (thus passion generating). This question answers my tought about selling in store, that aspect would make me a poor candidate for any large chain store (except maybe COSTCO??? I believe they don't push protection, right. but their electronics usually s%^&s).
