House shopping

So the wife decided she'd like to go house shopping this morning:eek: Looked around the local area and a development near (Gary) TNRabbit in Lusby, MD. I actually got shocked at some of the prices homes are going for. $350-400K is not my idea of affordable housing! A house note that large would cause me to lose sleep at night. This was for a house with 1925 sf with a basement and "almost" a half acre of land.

So what is considered affordable where you live? I may be interested!!

There are so many more around here.

Normally around here houses would go for 150-250K and that's more in subdivisions and they are fairly nice. In our "city" they are less, smaller older homes and would run around 100-200K max unless you get a place closer to our university then they will be more.

Average income for our county is 65K per year. SO gives you an idea of the make up of the area.

Also, I'm not sure if it's like this everywhere, but it seems worse now for buying and selling homes than in the last 2 years. Of course, as soon as the economy entered depression it was awful, but there seemed to be a rebound, but it seems bad again - at least in my area of the country.

Housing is pretty cheap in Texas.

Here's the link to the folks that built my house 2 years ago ....

Cheldan Homes, I think they are still building Energy Star Certified Houses.

The down side is we don't do basements here in Texas. (Well, you can but it takes special Engineering and is really expensive).

The upside is if your looking for acreage, that's available too. Plus we don't have a state income tax.

NAS JRB is local to Fort Worth.

(of course, that isn't really local to Md. but it is pretty cheap to live here)

Well, USA Jobs always has jobs listed at Shaw AFB, in Sumter, SC and Charleston, AFB., Theres also Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC

I paid $109k 5 years ago for 1200 sf, 3.5 acres, 30 min. outside Columbia.
BUT, the property values have gone up since the crash. Probably one of the few places in the country that have?

That kind of money would buy one sweet large home here. What you listed would cost about 150-200k here.

In the greater Portland OR, area that will get you with new construction: 2500 sq feet, no basement (water table too high) 7500 sq foot lot, if lucky(anti-sprawl growth control), maybe 3 car garage. That's it.

Zillow is your friend, my friend. www.zillow.com

It will give you an approximate value of your home (or anyone else's) anywhere in the country. Just had an appraisal for a refi and got the appraiser to raise his value almost $20,000 because of information I found on zillow. Gets me a lower rate and eliminates PMI. :D

I know I'm in Canada, but here, in my area of Ottawa, 220K gets you a garden home of about 1300 sq ft. 310K gets you a 2100 sq ft 4 bed townhouse. 375$ 4 bed 1900 sq ft single 450K gets you a 2500sqft 4 bed house. (give or take sq ft and $$$)

In Charlotte, NC is a bit higher, as we looked there, and for that price ( price we had in mind was 175 max ), ( average in this area 125 - 225 ) ( Charlotte add 60K ) we came down to Rock Hill, SC and homes range from the real cheapies, on up to lake-front homes, on to other good communities such as our cul de sac.

I'll sell you my single level brick ranch for the 184K it appraised at.
    I'll cover closing costs.
    Built in 1976.
Many new amenities, including new central air/heating unit.
    It is 2200 square foot.
Also has a one and a half detached garage ( of course not included in footage ).

We also have property down near Charleston, SC we were going to retire at, once we built there.

I was either going to rent the primary house out, or sell it.
Real time frame for rental is by 2017.
If I were to sell, well, we could do that anytime.

While my house is not on the market officially, it could be for sale, and I have a gazillion photos that I can provide.

Our home is almost in the woods like, yet in the city of Rock Hill.
There is a 5 acre pond out back, and the back yard is fenced.
Dog kennel area behind and beside garage, with cover and electricity.
The lot is merely .687, but all visitors think quite a bit more, as there is woods abutting that 5 acre pond, and the woods are directly in back.
I have planted more than 3100 plants, trees and shrubs/flowers since we took over this already wooded lot/home.

    If seriously interested, PM me.
If not, I will enjoy my property for now.

$350K in my area of Toronto (Etobicoke) will not get you a house at all. You can get a 2-bedroom condo (~1200 sq ft) though. :o Half-decent house in our area is around $600K. $500K will get you a 50-year-old house, which needs renovations. This sux.

Home prices are all over the map! pun intended:D

We're not sure we're in the market or not. After looking and comparing several homes in this area, probably won't buy here. We're going to retire in about eight years and may buy property down in the Carolinas to build on then like JKF above.

Thanks for all the comments. It makes it real when people answer instead of an internet database.

Go to South Carolina, especially within an hour of the coast.
    Preferably near Charleston.
We have our second property near Edisto Beach, quiet, yet close to many beaches.
And gotta love those gun laws here.
    Taxes are cheap too.
    Have the money ?

My step grand-parents lived in Oakville, back then (I'm talking 22 yrs ago) it was very quiet. That was the same time my parents sold in Etobicoke, 22 yrs ago. I'm sure that house is worth tons more now.
