...OK - how many people had to join Facebook to find out about the life's of______???

...Don't understand why they give out SO much personal information.

...I created a page just to see other pages.....provided the basics....and chose to share with certain friends......

...it is pretty "Awesome".....but?????

....So how many members over 50 belong to Facebook? Do you felt you had a choice?

I own an Internet Development firm that I started in 1996 because I was (and still am) convinced the invention of the Internet is the most important invention of my lifetime. We run over 100 websites and focus on the security of data passing to and from those sites. I recommend to anyone who will listen that they refrain from sharing any personal information on the Facebook platform because I believe in the future that information will be made available to parties who have no business learning about them.

FB isn't a free service. You basically barter the information you provide in exchange for the service they provide. If you don't believe the benefit exceeds the price, don't use it. I work for a company that helps them (and other social media sites) turn that information into the monetary return that pays to keep their infrastructure running. Whether or not you load personal information on their site isn't going to have much of a factor on how they monetize information.

No way, No chance, NOT happening. And ABSOLUTELY unnecessary. I peruse friends' sites but really have no 'need' or 'desire' to participate in this. Look at my polk handle....purposely designed so that NO search engine can fully correlate it with 'me'?

I take a 'minimalist' approach to the internet with regards to identity markings, or trails. Make them work for it, I say.

Every time you buy something on line it's like writing St. Augustine's Confessions! Who are you, phone, email, age, employment, children.....No one asks me that when I buy in 'person'?? Yeah I know it's security, but read the small print...THEY SELL ALL THAT INFO and hence....SPAM, identity theft...and who knows what else. Someone in Japan singing Karoake on my credit card in a Geisha house?

You were smart then to just provide basics. It's my job to investigate sites such as these, and facebook has more holes than any other social networking site I've run across. There are a lot of loopholes and back doors to get what you want, and the best defense is a lack of information.

My father has an account, as well as my grandfather. I also run across MANY 50+ out there on Facebook. In fact, its a little surprising when I DON'T find a facebook for them.
I never cared much for FB as I believe it is a threath to personal info and your advice proves that, thanks for sharing as this is more reason not to enlist.

Yep, internet is the greatest invention but also the most threath to privacy!

Had to read that for school, managed to get through maybe 15 pages before I gave up :D But I agree.

I find Facebook a handy tool to keep in contact with people I don't see so much anymore. It seems like everybody's on it, as long as you're smart with what info you give out, I think it's great.

I do facebook but I live on this forum. Maybe I should modify my information in FB based on what I've read above.

30 years old and no facebook page. Never joined as I always mentally looped it in with myspace and how retarded it was. Now I'm pretty anti-social networking. Forums are my social networking.

I would agree with you if my old friends from my younger days were audiophiles, but their not. I've found FB a great way to find and get together with old friends and keep in touch with them. I've also found it good to be friends on FB with my friends here to discuss all things NOT audio.

    What's Facebook?:D
No need, no desire. If I want to find out what someone is doing I'll call or visit them and ask.

I've enjoyed FB for keeping up with family and friends, but I don't share very much about myself, mostly comment on others but in generic ways. I keep my security settings (for what it is worth) quite high. Most importantly, I never talk about a vacation while I'm actually out of town, just a pic or two once I'm back. A key is to leave work drama issues completely out.
