Monitor 50/60 for Rears + other questions

Hey guys,

I've currently got the following gear:

2x Monitor 70 (Fronts, biamped)
2x Monitor 40 (Rears)
1x CS2 (Center)
PSW-10 (Sub)

Yamaha HTR-5990 Receiver

I mostly use this setup for gaming with a projector (PS3/360) and some home theater. Rarely music, as it's in a separate theater room.

My issues:

1) Obviously the sub is too small, I know that and I'm thinking about snagging a PSW505. They keep dipping in price a lot on Newegg. Do people generally have a favorable opinion of the PSW505? It being dipping to around $225 or lower really puts it in my price range. I've been buying Monitor gear because it's such an amazing deal. This is my first real HT system.

2) I have really crappy speaker stands for the Monitor 40s, and lately the Monitor 50s/60s have been getting very cheap. I'd thought "why don't I just buy either the 50s/60s instead of blowing the money on new stands?"

Comparing the specs on the Monitor 40s and 50s there doesn't seem to be a lot of difference in the sound they'll produce. Will I see any benefit in audio quality swapping the 40s out with the 50s, or 60s in my rear channels?

Appreciate any responses, thanks guys!

I like the 505 and it has good reviews.
However, I really would want a remote, so switching from one source to another, I don't have to get up and down, readjusting all the time, as I do with the PSW10, it rattles if I have it too high and cannot hear it if I have it too low.
So, in my opinion, the 505 may be perfect for you.
( me, I do go from music to TV, and want the remote models )

I am not familiar with that stereo ( or any stereo for that matter ), but I too saw no difference in the 50's except the no need for a stand thing.
    But, I do own 40's and 60's.
They are both great, but the 60's are a bunch more output.
So, if your receiver can take it or rather give it, then yes.
If only to replace crappy stands, I saw on the forum somewhere, where someone wall mounted 40's with wall mounts for different speakers, successfully.
But, if only so as to not buy stands, then the 50's are for you.

This is the link to the receiver I have:

    http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200015&CTID=5000400&ATRID=1020&DETYP=ATTRIBUTE

It should have sufficient power to run the Monitor 60s in the rears. I'm wondering if a set of 60's is overkill for rears anyhow. I can't do a wall mount situation because the room has a funny layout. I don't think I'd trust myself to mount the 40s probably anyhow, those things are pretty beefy.

Since there appears to be not much difference between 40s/50s except for form factor (bookshelf vs floorstanding), I'm wondering if I should just get those 50s, or try to find the 60s cheap and use them.

The Yamaha should have enough power to drive all of your speakers at a proper level. Whether or not the 60's as surrounds is overkill depends on your room. I upgraded my jbl e20's (bookshelf speaker on stands) to a pair of 60's, and the rear soundstage is clearer and more defined. Not only that, they look much nicer than the jbl's on stands. Cannot comment on the PSW505, but I've seen a lot of good reviews on that product.
