what is the difference between dolby prologic and dts

Hi All:

I new new to the whole home theater thing. Due to limitations, at least for now my home theater setup consists of two front speakers (in-wall), a center channel and subwoofer. I have an onyko tsxr 608 receiver.
Can anybody tell me what is the difference between dolby prologic and DTS. Those seem to be the only modes I have when watching a movie.

With the receiver there are different listening mode choices such as plII, plIIx, mono, theater dimensional, neo 6 cinema DTS.

This is so confusing. Please help!

prologic takes 2 channels and tries to make it into a 5 channel sound.

Dolby digital or DTS and above actually have 5 or more discrete channels of sound.

How do you have your DVD or Blu-Ray player connected to your stereo? If you do not have it connected with a digital connection (optical, coax or HDMi) or at least 6 analog wires you will not have DD or DTS available to you.

    Good Luck,

    Michael

Have been able to find any reading material about surround sound formats, and how they are played back in the home?

Thank you for providing a nutshell answer. My bluray has an optical connection to my receiver so I can get DTS. The receiver reads "DTS" when watching blurayrays thru the bluray player. My digital DVR cable box allows me to get Dolby Digital when I switch the audio setting in the cablebox menu to "Dolby Digital" from HDMI. Otherwise, thru the cable box, I get Prologic II.
