Okay, I am deployed to Iraq and have been ordering a new setup when deals arise. I have a Polk CS2 Center, 4 Polk Monitor 70s for front and rear, and a Polk DSW MicroPro 4000 Sub. As I get closer to home the Onkyo TX-NR708 prices are falling and I will get one soon. I am interested in getting an external amp but I have a seems like retarded question. If I get a 7 channel external amp with 125 watts per channel, is that just 20 wpc more than the Reciever or does it add 125 giving me 230?
Also, what sides should I get for wall mounting?
Thanks for the help!

In regards to the amp question... It will only give you 125w per channel. It will not add to the Onkyo's power. The external amp will give you 125w true power. Typically on the AVR's they power rating is only for 2 channels. More than likely it will drop dramatically if you go to 5/7 channels, while the external amp will be 125w/ch all the time. the power from the amp will be better.
I would recommend monitor 40's for wall mounting. you could also just get another pair of floor standing speakers for surrounds as well.Front - RTiA5's
Rear - RTiA3's
Center - CSiA4
Sub - PSW110 -
I wall mounted monitor 40's and love it. I had just bought new ones and didn't want to drill holes into my monitor 40s. I also wanted to get a mount that would tilt. I ended up getting http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002UV03MW/ref=oss_product pinpoint am-40 wall mounts. The monitor 40s were heavier and larger than I expected and with the tilt I wanted they didn't sit completely in. Instead of worrying about them falling and damaging, I use 1 (instead of the 3) that they wanted. they are sturdy are exactly what I wanted with minimal holes in the speakers.

Quite a few AVR have amp sections that are still operational even though you use there pre-outs so you end with both the amp and the avr amp section being available for power, you just need to check yours, I have had an Onkyo, H&K and presently a B&K which work this way. Some folks find if you get a nice two channel or three channel amp for the front stage things sound quite nice, just let the AVR handle your surrounds.
The advice about the avr power ratings is typical for the lower cost units, some can even be rated with only one channel driven, most though with two and then only for peak hits, fact is though 35 watts or so across the seven speakers plays very loudly, using a sub as you are for the big bass hits is a good thing to do as it relieves the speakers/avr from this duty, I would set all the speakers to small and let the sub do the low end work.
Have fun.
Oh and excuse me for not saying straight away, Thank you for serving our Country and we look forward to welcoming you home.
