Monitor 60's Set up

Whats up everyone, I was always into great audio but didn't know much at the time. A couple of years back I bought a Sony home theater in a box.

The receiver is a STR-K9900P. I hooked up a pair of Monitor 60's with 16 gauge wire from radioshack. Unfortunately the tweeter on the left channel went out, so I had to RMA it. I must admit the sound was a great step up from the previous 6.1 set up.

I have a couple of questions about my setup and thought maybe you guys could give me a bit of guidance.

-Is the receiver I'm using bottlenecking the performance of my speakers?
-Is there a better way to tell how far I can take my speakers without damaging them?
-I plan on getting a pair Monitor 70's for the front and moving the 60's to the rear, is this a good idea?

Any tips and suggestions on my setup is appreciated. Also this setup is in a relatively small bedroom (14'x9')

Are you still using the remaining speakers and the sub from Sony? I think the original speakers were 6ohms, and your 60's are 8ohms. That might be an issue..

Don't turn them up so loud. Upgrade your receiver. Upgrade the remaining speakers.

If you have the room, why not. I'm using the 60's for the surround rear channels and they sound very good. I noticed that your receiver has multi-channel inputs - Have you thought about picking up a blu-ray player with analog audio outputs? You could listen to next gen audio(Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio) without having to upgrade your receiver to a unit with hdmi.

Don't forget to get a center channel speaker, CS2 if you have the room and can find one at a reasonable price - your receiver also has an additional sub out connection - add another sub. Possibly upgrade to a better sub, and better sub cable that came with your HTIB.

Thanks for your input, Yes, I currently am using the remaining Sony speakers, They are indeed 6 ohms. I will disconnect my remaining Monitor 60 till the RMA'd one arrives back.

My setup will mostly be used for my computer. I have a HT Omega Striker Sound card that is connected to my receiver via 3.5mm to red/white RCA jacks. Is there a better way of connecting my system?

I have tried using those high definition audio formats using an optical cable from my soundcard to the receiver, but I stopped using it because there were some downsides to using that method. I still watch Blurays from my computer and PS3 though.

As for my receiver, does it have enough power to feed the monitor 60's and 70's plus the CS2?

I never knew audio was this complicated until doing some research here and there. BTW, love your setup, that was the route I was going.

I run 2 M70's and some generic yamahas for surrounds with a cs2 center. Yeah it powers all 5 speakers but its not safe to turn up really loud imo. Why don't ya get an amp? I'm saving up for one. The benefits are huge

P.S. I was considering buying some M60's for surround duty and 5 channel music listening. Still debating.

I will eventually get an Amp, I didn't know there is a less chance of blowing a speaker when an amp is present, I thought it was the opposite. I'm slowly going to put together a nice little setup, I want it mainly for music thats why my initial idea was a 2 front 2 rear setup.

The monitor 60's are great for a rear surround application. Today thru the 19th of July, newegg is blowing the cherry 60's out the door for $99 a pop.

    Save $40 w/ promo code EMCYVZP72, ends 7/19 Polk Audio Monitor 60

The 60's in black are still $109. End of life for the monitor series as we know it. The product replacing the monitor 60 series is the 60c:

What the heck?! 60c? I just bought those 60's for sale before they sell out. They match my 70s and I might as well. They'll make great rear/side surround speakers.

60c have the same speakers as the 60s?

Wonder if there is a cs2c lol

Too, you can go the other way with your receiver set up and get the Monitor 30's for the rears. Besides Newegg, try Polk's refurb's on eBay. I have purchased from both, and love my Monitor's, I would buy all over again. I found that with a lesser quality receiver, such as mine ( see signature ) that good surrounds was a waste of time. If I had an Onkyo or Denon or the like (aka, real receiver ), I would put my Monitor 40's back to surround duty, or buy 70's or 50's and adjust the set up accordingly. I further bi -amped my fronts and love it, although bi-amping, one must perform their own tests and judge for themselves as not all humans hear the same.
Hope this helps, and good luck

Yes, Newegg has the new 2010 Polk line up for sale. I would like to see the 70's come down in price a little bit, Does anyone know if the tweeters on the 70's are the same as the ones on the 60's? I already blew one out and was not even abusing the speakers. Oh, and anyone know of a decent amp that wont break the bank?
