Are you into any health "rituals"?

Is anybody here into any sort of health regimen? Meaning...are you watching your body's PH balance and eating more alkaline foods to get rid of body acidity?

I read a book on this and it does seem to have some real benefits. I've on my 5th day of "cleansing" and have been eating only greens and a special green drink to get my PH back up (I bought some PH test strips and my body is more acidic than I'd like it to be). I also bought a juicer and pulled the food steamer back into service.

In nutshell, germs and "bad things" feed on acidity in our body. So, if you PH is balanced and you are more alkaline, germs have nowhere to feed...the result...a healthy body that doesn't get sick.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it because I found it very interesting.

Alcohol kills germs too....just sayin'. And the last time I used a juicer was when I ran out of orange juice in the carton and my sons marching band was selling fresh oranges to raise money. Juiced 'em right up! Drinking straight vodka in the morning is a faux-pas! Didn't want the neighbors to think ill of me while I sat at the end of the driveway reading the newspaper in my boxers while I enjoyed my glass of "juice".;)

I never heard of that. I don't even check the PH balance of my spa. ;)

I do take vitamins every night at dinner, have 2-3 glasses of wine, and exercise every day. On Friday's I consume mass quantity of beer to purge the toxins from working all week.

Seems to work. I'm not dead yet (knocks on head).

Every time I"ve read a reputable nutritionist talk about diet, they, without fail, debunk the efficacy of "cleanses" or "detox" regimes. Your body doesn't need anything cleaned out of it, it does a fine job of that on its own if you just eat right and exercise.s

Your post is very interesting. Early this year I wound-up in hospital. Aside from a blood clot which was blocking the path out of my intestines (couldn't go to the bathroom anymore) they found bacteria in my intestines. Doctors didn't have a clue how they got in there. It took months to clear them out of my system usingantibiotics (IV fed). Unfortunately, conventional medicine feeds pills and other nocive chemicals to fix physical problems. I had to take good bacteria to keep the flora healthy as all those chemicals were a threath to the health of the flora.

After few months, I turned to naturopathie, osteopathie etc... I was suggested a diet in order to eliminate the acidity in my body (which affects (accentuate joint pains). I definitely had to do something for my health, the hospitalisation was a big eye opener.

    Food to stay away:
    -ALL meats including chicken
-ALL dairy products including ice cream and of course coffee

    Food that is considered good:
    -Fish of course
-Leguminus which provides for proteine which you normally get from meat
    -Finally eggs
-Of course, excersize is a big part of the diet plan

I heard about PH monitoring in the past but it was never mentioned by the naturopat. What else are you taking or suggesting to balance body PH? By the way, I tried to acquire the PH strips from local pharmacies unsuccessfully, where do you get them?

In your case your post lead me to the fridge ;) I guess there is nothing wrong with a few cold ones on Friday evening  Actually I need that as this was my first week back at work after 5 months of absence.

I keep a bottle of chlorophyl in the fridge. My son came over once a few years ago and asked me about it. I told him I had read somewhere where it cleanses lactic acid buildup in the muscles, and back when I was playing Friday Night indoor soccer with the other old guys, it seemed to help the day after when I'd be sore as hell.

His eyebrows kind of go up when I tell him that.

He used to manage a couple different GNC's and even had his own sports nutrition store for a while. He tells me one time he's opening the GNC store in Norman and Adrian Peterson walks in. Picks up a couple, three bottles of chlorophyll, goes over to check out.
My son says, "Oh you like that stuff, eh?"
Peterson says, " You really ought to do your homework."
meaning: You're the manager here, you should know why I'm getting this.

    I eat lots of salads.

I always thought a healthy immune system would take care of the nasty germs. Anyway, ever try to keep the PH balanced in a pool ? Nearly impossible, too many variables and you can drive yourself nuts trying to do so. Ever hear old timers say they are afraid to retire because when they do,they'll die ? The body and mind are designed to be "in use". A healthy diet and some excersize could go along way into providing long term health and not consume your life as to what will raise or lower your PH.

I like health "rituals" because they get incorporated into my lifestyle versus yo-yo'ing from trend diets and trendy exercise regimes. Here are mine.

I did not have any gastro-intestinal problems but thought it may be healthier for me to increase my fiber intake so I experimented and switched to Kellog's All Bran Original cereal for breakfast about 3 weeks ago. I add a small handful of Bear Naked Fit Whole Grain Granola Vanilla Almond Crunch and strawberries or blueberries to make it interesting because the cereal with milk tastes like wet twigs. Wife won't touch it. I do substitute oatmeal now and then.

Initially, it completely stopped up my plumbing for almost two days but afterwards I felt lighter and full of energy during the day but now that I'm used to it I don't notice the benefits quite as much unless I've been eating eggs, bacon and toast for a few days and I go back to it. I do get hungry again about 3 hours later.

I exercise moderately with cycles of P90x (not strict), some elliptical, some cycling, and will start running once the weather gets cooler or I buy a treadmill. I occasionally drink scotch or bourbon or red wine (3 - 5 times a week). I do eat out a lot but I watch what I eat but I do include burgers and pizza sometimes. I drink too much Diet Coke but have slowly switched to hot tea.

My scale tells me I'm down to that last 10 pounds but my pants tell a different story. A healthy pant size for me is 30" and I'm down to 31".

    I'm 38.

I actually tend to think it's exactly the opposite, as you would have to either have a lot of nature food... Which came with civilization...

In any case, my family (encouraged by mom) has gone through an apple diet several times for just the same reason... Oatmeal will actually help a lot with this sort of thing... I have it every day for breakfast...

I'm curious as to why dairy products aren't allowed.

eh I have a few things that I like to do but got away from and now getting back into it. I've had a very odd stomach since I was a child and would get ulcears all the time since the 5th grade so I normally have to watch what I eat/drink constantly. I typically like to eat a more balanced diet as much as possible and stay away from red meat but eat very lean turkey and chicken if I can. Also sticking with wheat products, but not over doing it.

Also not eating a lot of processed foods, typically just veggies, fruit, and meat I can cook myself, not somethign that comes out of a can that has so much salt it will stand to the end of time.

I also take some other vitamins ect that will help me out and keep me balanced but thats about it. Started working out again so I always try to do medatation to help get myself relaxed because the stress of work can be a burden at times.

I drink a case of beer over the course of the weekend.
I drink water at work during the morning, soda in the afternoon.
I try to have a container of fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt for breakfast (the good sugary kind).
I eat $1 frozen Banquet meals for lunch... some with sodium as high as 1000mg.
I sit on my **** all day at work (computer job).
I sit on my **** all night at home (lazy).
I eat whatever is left in the fridge for supper. If there's nothing in there, I'll make some hamburger helper, or just throw burgs or bbq chicken on the grill. I usually keep salad around, but it tends to go bad before I eat it. It makes me feel better that it's there.
I eat potato chips, or a bag of microwave popcorn for a night snack (Sweet + Buttery... best popcorn out there!)

Lots of good rituals in there. I should write my own book! It'd have to be titled "Inherit a metabolism" or something. I'm 24, 6', and 170lbs.

It works because you're 24. The equation changes somewhere in your mid 30's. That growth hormone you've taken for granted is keeping your metabolism rev'd. Kiss it goodbye. Fat will start to get into your muscles (intramuscular fat) and once it's full will start to deposit under your skin (adipose fat). Next thing you know, you're 34, 6' and 270 lbs almost overnight and you'll start singing, "Glory Days". Happens even quicker if you get married. ;)

I don't eat red meat, except on special occasions (such as at a cookout), because it disagrees with my digestive tract. I don't eat white bread either, except as noted above. I'm debating cutting out cheese as well. Seems the less fatty crap I eat, the better I feel (no surprise there).

Also, no soda except occasionally as a treat. If I want a sweet drink, there are plenty of packaged teas with waaaaay less added sodium, or fruit juice. The only sodas I really care for are orange and root beer anyway. Beer is my fizzy vice.

Also, I'm 24, 6'3'', and 230 lbs. I didn't inherit a metabolism, and failure to adhere to my above dietary structure results in rapid weight gain.

I am also a lazy slob. Seems like the thing to be here. (Let's go watch a movie!) But I used to write copy for a suppliment company before "wellness" was a buzz word. I got to try a bunch of things, and find out the real science behind them. (And make no mistake: I was writing copy. That is, basically lying. I only don't do that when I write copy for... Polk Audio...)

Also, I read all the books when they first came out, including "Fast Food Nation" and "The Omnivore's Dilemma," both excellent books that will change your eating habits and fast. (Let my wife read them -- wrong move! -- and now she's a fish eatin' psuedo vegan and I can't even have JIF peanut butter in the goddamn house!)

So, I'm for no high fructose corn syrup. If it has it in the ingreds, I don't buy it. With very very few exceptions. I eat unprocessed stuff now, brown rice, nuts and grains. Lots of fiber keeps me moving. We don't eat red meat (unless I'm out at a place that's got a veal special, involving lots of tortured meat, and someone else is payin), and we don't have much dairy in the house (soy milk).

I love cheese, so I have some fresh cheese around. My wife likes Diaya, which is the only non-dairy cheese-thing we've found that actually tastes and melts like real cheese.

I make slight exceptions in the name of moderation. I drink small-batch beer, mostly darker. I try to keep away from "whole grain" pasta even tho my wife demands it (and it sucks making two different pasta at once), and I must have the 2 tsps of sugar and squirt of evaporated milk in my Luzianne coffee in the morning. (You'll pry my coffee mug out of my cold dead... etc.)

All this good eatin, and I sit on my fat **** all day at this computer making up LIES LIES and more LIES!

    Bring on the Hershey's bars!

'Theorically yes however, fact is most humans don't eat right. Matter of fact, humans weren't met to be carnivores, that simply changed over time.'

If that were true we would have a top and bottom row of grinding teeth like true non-carnivores. The 'fact' is we have a combination on tearing, ripping and grinding teeth, hence we are omnivours. "Born to Run" is a book I just read about the Tarahumara (sp) the running tribe of native indians from the cooper canyons of mexico. I don't remember if it was a coach or a doctor that came to the conclusion that they have near the perfect diet and his recomendation on how to follow it was to 'eat like a poor person' most of our nutrition should come from grains and plant material, meat should add flavor not be the main item. Oh and they drink large amounts of beer, well a corn based 'adult beverage' that the writer coined 'corn beer' so it sounds like my fellow beer drinkers have done the research.

I checked when I started and my PH was 6.5 and it is now up to 7.0. The ideal is 7.36. I may get a digital reader instead of the test strips so I can get a more accurate reading.

I'm on the "see-food diet," but i do stay away from pre-made stuff, and cook all my meals myself. I eat fast food maybe once a week, drink a lot of juice.

But really. I eat. Constantly. A lot. I stuff my face 4-5 times a day. I've gained 47lbs as of last weekend in the last 12 months. :D

Confession: i drink a lot of soda, but i've cut down in recent months. I mainly drink it for the caffeine content to stay away at work.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

Looking at the responses it's not surprising to see that some of us try to eat well and others just do what feels good. That's all fine too, anyone can change IF and WHEN they want to.

Personally, I decided it's time for a change. I am now 52 and I figured that this is the last chance I have to get in shape so that my later years can be spent actively and without pain. I look around and see people in their 60's and 70's and I say to myself that I DO NOT want to be in such poor shape at that age. I also see the ones that took care of themselves and the difference is startling.
