Hey.

I've never blown a speaker before until possibly today. I have an Onkyo TX-SR608 and was hooking up speakers that I've had laying around testing quality. It was at moderate volume, highest gone was the THX Reference Level.

The right channel/speaker on a pair of Polk Bookshelf S4's (1991ish) & Sony channel/speakerSSF-5000, the tweeters (and mids on the Sony Floorstanders) completely stopped working. In disbelief I tried both speakers on multiple different channels on the Onkyo. They omit ZERO sound from the highs/mids, but the woofers are in full tact and work perfectly.

...Should I be worried about my Onkyo? Was reference level just pushing these speakers past their limits? They sounded perfect. ZERO distortion. It just...stopped.

Note: that I've had a pair of JBL L3's (2-way floorstanders) hooked up to the receiver for over a month with daily usage at sometimes volumes 10dB higher than reference with zero problems/distortion.

Thanks
Brandon

It's possible that volume did them in. that's pretty loud for older or cheaper speakers.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
