Just bought my first Norah Jones CD the other day...The Fall. I like it, but I'd like to know how it compares to her other CD's before I go out and buy more Norah Jones. Is it her best, her worst?

I would go with the first one "Come away with me" next. IMO it's the best one. She has a lot of good songs though, but as an album her first is the best, IMO of course.

I think "Not Too Late" is easily her best. Haven't heard The Fall, though.

I like her bluesy stuff the best. I have "Come Away With Me" on Classic Records 200 gm vinyl and the sonics are A+ but it sounds like she's swallowing the microphone all the time.

"The Fall" took some time to grow on me, but now it's my favorite.

I would love for her to do more blues but while researching New York City, liner note in the Peter Malick CD recorded before Norah was famous IIRC, Malick approached Norah to do blues and she said she wasn't familiar with the genre.

I love my "New York City" SACD but my favorite album is "Come Away with Me" because of "Shoot the Moon". Thx for the rec on the 200gm vinyl.

I have one cd of hers. Not sure which one since I am at work right now. I played the whole thing the other day and enjoyed it. I got it from a friend so I do not have a lot of exposure. What are the better albums?

There are really only 4 albums out.

    2002 Come Away with Me
    2004 Feels Like Home
    2007 Not Too Late
    2009 The Fall

But I also highly recommend the 2003 "New York City" by The Peter Malick Group featuring Norah Jones (recording dates Aug 2000-May 2003).

If you're looking for a sampling of her music overall, there are no greatest hits album that I know of.

Absolutely. J. Walter Hawkes can blow! He used to be in my brother's funk band here in Mobile, Alabama. Now he plays with a lot of bands around NYC and has won a few Emmys for his work doing music for kids' shows.

I think the Fall is quite a bit different than her early stuff, especially Come Away With Me. The Fall is much bluesier and almost has a vintage sound to it. Overall, I think it is a great album and is right up there with her first release. I haven't been as fond of the two middle albums though. Maybe I just didn't give them as much chance...
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore...

I have all but The Fall, and I'd say Come Away With Me sounds a tad better than the other two.

The only annoyance is that her voice, lovely as it is, is waaaay too hot in the mix. I'ts supposed to be the loudest thing in the mix, but in her case, it's overkill...almost to the point of ruining the mix.

Her best work is New York City, The Fall and The Little Willies. Her worst is Come Away With Me for this reason,

That was the work I was referring to and couldn't remember it . . . as matter of fact you turned me on to it. Another matter of fact was when we were listening to the above record at my house we were discussing the sonics and them we came up with the "it sounds like she's swallowing the microphone."

Jesse, leaving fidelity, mixing and acoustics out of it; which would you say is her best based on the performance and/or writing on the album?

Greg, I listed them in order. IMO, she is a much better blues singer than she is at jazz.

A friend that does not like Norah Jones came over one day, I threw on New York City. He liked it and could not even tell it was Norah singing.

I guess my opinion is in the minority so far. Not too late is the bottom of the list for me. I have to agree with those who recommend the Peter Malick Group. I wish Norah would do another collaboration with them. The Fall also grew on me the more I listened to it.

Ah, I see so that is based on writing/performance, sorry I got the impression that it was based on mixing, fidelity, etc.
I have not heard the New York City CD before. Maybe I should check it out.

Which is based off of what? Does that mean that if you don't like the mixing, production, etc. you won't buy it and/or listen to it again?

Edit: Sorry Jesse, re-reading the post makes it seem like I am coming accross as antagonistic. That is not my intent, just trying to figure out what you mean.

No problems here. It seems that I am not giving you the answer you're looking for, but I'm not sure how to say it any other way. Nothing else matters other than if my ears like it. Come Away With Me bothers my ears, so it doesn't get played.

The Presedential Pontificator prefers the blues in general jazz is a rather low rotatation priority, mean man that he is a new disc arrived one day by post from him the aforementioned New York City it has been in rotation ever since although I do notice my heat races a bit whenever Norah says Light Bulb she also did some good work with Willie Nelson. The CAWM SACD did no favor for the format its been dark for me lately.
