So I finally decided to try setting up a surround sound system for movies and gaming after going back on forth on the subject for quite some time. Found a bunch of sales on highly rated products and went for it. Here's what it looks like I'm going to end up with:

2 Monitor 70's
1 CS20 (CS2 sold out)
1 PSW505
4 Monitor 30's for surrounds and rear surrounds
Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver

Room is 20' L X 19' W. 11' Ceiling at center and 9' at the sides. So some acoustical challenges :).

Essentially, how did I do for a first attempt? Is this going to sound pretty good or should it be a total disaster?

I would have preferred the Monitor 40's but I have to wall mount the rears and unless I wanted to buy actual bookshelves to set the Monitor 40's on the wall mounted 30's were a lot easier to place in my setup. (I realize it's possible to wall mount the 40's but having to buy and mount the requisite speaker holders just looked like it was over my level of competence when it comes to that sort of project.)

Should the 30's be sufficient as surrounds and rear surrounds in my setup? Based on my price range and choice of products, I really don't need the best sounding system, I just want it to sound pretty good and be a substantial improvement over TV speakers. (And not have the surrounds completley washed out by the other components.)

End ramble.

Hello and welcome to club polk!

It seems like that will be a great sounding set of speakers. What receiver are you using? I use monitor 30's for surround duty, and they do just fine - I wouldn't worry. The only thing I may be concerned about is the CS20 instead of the CS2. The CS20 is timbre matched to the TSI line. I know those took the place of Monitor's, but I'll let the better informed comment on the matching of the CS20 to the monitor line.

    Congrats!

    DONE!!!

    Congrats and welcome.

And remember that your surround speakers should be somewhat dominated by the others. They definitely shouldn't draw attention to themselves.

    WELCOME TO CLUB POLK!!

M-30s will do a fine job as surrounds....I ran a similar configuration but with a more powerful Onkyo...the TX-SR805. But the 608 will be good enough in your room as long as you don't expect it to fill the ENTIRE room but just the listening area...which I assume is a tad smaller in size?

    Enjoy!

You are on the right path. Very similar setup to what I am/was running. I know this isn't the for sale section but I'm selling a cs2 if you are interested in me shipping it. Overall everything will sound fantastic and like it's been stated, the sides and backs should get overpowered by the fronts anyways so saving some money in that regard wont hurt at all.
