Headphone cable for AKG Studios

Don't want to break the bank since I've got my mind/budget set on other things audio but I'm looking for a headphone cable upgrade for my AKG 271's.

They utilize a mini-XLR plug on the headphone end (which is also used by 701's and a few other models).

Let me know what you've got! Just want something better than the factory cord.

    Hello Freddy,
I can certainly understand a person wanting to make anything sound better. However, it is possible the headphone company has used the specific cable, that came with the headphones, as part of the overall design. The capacitance of the factory cable might be part of the treble response of the 'phones. By replacing it without taking in the specific requirements, could change the sound and maybe not for the better. It might be a good idea to check with AKG first?
    Cheers, Ken

    Hey Ken!

Appreciate your concern but many headphone users upgrade to better headphone cords just the same way we upgrade to better speaker wire/interconnects.

Whiplash audio and Cardas seem to be the most popular headphone cable manufacturer's but there are a few more if you look around. You'll also find these cables available in copper and silver. Instead of paying full retail, just thought I'd check to see if anyone here has an unused quality cable laying around.

    Hey Freddy,
Let us know what you decide on and how things improve. What is the impedance of your 'phones? I need a recommendation for a pair of high impedance ones (200 to 600 Ohms) for ReVox monitoring.

    Hey Ken,
unfortunately my experience with different headphones is very limited. However if you want something a bit more accurate with a wider soundstage than say a pair of AKG701's I'd recommend the Sennheiser HD 650's.

They can go for anywhere around $240-$300 on Amazon, and about $220 used (head-fi.org might have a few).

They maintain their value, and for good reason too. And they're rated at 200ohms.

    Hey Ken,

don't have any experience with them but those are considered in every way better than the HD650's I recommended you.

Head on over to head-fi.org, there are some reviews on there and I think were rated #1 wanted headphones though they do have a premium price tag  but are considered well worth the money!
