Just saw these show up on Craigslist. They are 15 minutes from me. I've got a call into the seller to find out a bit more about them.....and may have to bite even though I just did the XO mods on my 1C's.

I'm not familar with the variations of the SRS lineup. Can anyone help enlighten me so I know what to ask/look for? My Anthem 40wpc tube amp drives the 1C's fine. Would it drive the SRS's or do they require more power?

After a bit more research, the seller states he bought them 26 years ago which according to my math means he bought them in 1985 when the original SDA-SRS was introduced. Can the original SDA-SRS's be upgraded to TL's by swapping the original tweets for RDO's?

    No.

Well, I just pulled off the impossible by doing a double-blind comparison all by myself, purely by virtue of the fact that I completely and stupidly forgot what I did last. I guess that getting old does have its advantages after all :D

What is the upgrade path for the SRS's and is it worth waiting for the TL version SRS's to come along?

Throw some RDO-194's and upgrade the stock x-over and you'll be good to go.

Well that is hard for me to decide for you, only your ears will tell you if you are satisfied with the sound of the original SDA SRS. Read DarqueKnight's threads and his experiences with the upgrades that he has done and that may help you decide. Of course I know of a couple of polkies that prefer the original version most likely due to more bass but the general consensus is that the 1.2TL's are more accurate.

if i were to do it all over again, i wouldn't make it a MUST that i get the TL's. i've had both the original srs and now the TL's and if i could save some dough on the earlier model, i would. get these and don't look back. if you find tl's in the future, you can sell these for what you paid today for them.

Are they worth the 1k asking price?

It all depends on the condition of them and how hard it is to find the big SDA's if you live in Arizona where there appears to be some sort of breeding ground for the damn things and their in bad shape then no, if you have never seen a pair come up for sale in your area and they are in semi decent condition then yes. As far as the sound quality goes yes IMHO it is hard to beat a pair of the big SDA's for 1k.

The fact that they are 15 minutes from me helps. The gas money alone to drive anywhere in a truck big enough to haul them would cost some $$. I'll probably check them out to see what the condition is.

I'm still interested to know if I have enough amplifier power to drive them.

They are really efficent for a non horn design 93db I think? you could most likely use a 30 WPC amp rated for 4 ohms and be happy or give them 300 wpc and be blown away by the detail clarity and huge soundstage, they wont sound like the lil polks they will really impress you.

I totally agree with Snow. I have had the original SRS and now currently own two sets of 1.2tl's and 1.2's. The reason why I keep the set of 1.2's is because they sound very similar to the originals but are easier to drive. They are 6ohms compared to the original 4ohm SRS speakers. The originals and 1.2's have more bass and are great for hard rock music. If these original SRS speakers are in great shape I would buy them and put some RDO 194's in them. After that get yourself a nice power amp and you will have an awesome two channel setup. The only thing I would caution you about is that to really enjoy them, they need a large room. They also weigh 180 lbs. earch so get some help to left these bad boys. They are great speakers. Good luck.
