I can honestly say I do not hear a difference between HDMI audio and using the optical link I am using now... Picture quality on the other hand is another story and HDMI does look better.

I've been using Onkyo receivers as a pre/pro for the last few years without any issues.

As for an amp, keep your eyes open, there are more than a few 3 and 5 channel amps out there.

That's probably because you haven't compared TrueHD to plain old Dolby Digital. It's like comparing lossless to a 320kb MP3.

The difference between those two is surprisingly audible, even off of an ipod plugged into the AUX of a car HU. Too bad lossless is so space-consuming.

I think your advice for the cheap receiver and separate amp off the bat will work the best.

So now I'm open to suggestions for both. Keep in mind the price tags a little bit... not sure how much I can truly spend without the fiance going nuts BUT, she knows that on my audio quest I need to just do it right.

    Hit me with suggestions.
    HDMI is over-rated IMHO...

There is 1 receiver that comes to mind that will solve both problems...

I need your budget if this is your idea of a cheap AVR:p:D:D

Appreciate the link but now I just feel like a flat out noob. Am I somehow able to get the TrueHD out of that for movie tracks? I thought you had to use HDMI from say a ps3 into a receiver capable of truehd in order for it to not be synthetic? Am I missing something? I truly don't mind going from hdmi to the tv as long as I'm not losing the sound in the process...

Using a PS3 you'll have to use HDMI. The linked AVR had multi-channel inputs. Using a Blu-ray player with multi-channel outputs would allow you to get TrueHD with that AVR. Again, if you'll be using your PS3 as your blu-0ray player, this is not an option for you.

If one considers there would be no urgent need to get an external amp AND an AVR with this choice, the economy of my suggestion is easy to see.:)
