All the BP signs are gone...

Started getting reports from friends around the state that their local BP stations are either removing or covering up their logos on the signs and canopies. Last night I rode by our local BP and all the signs and logos were there. Today? I drove by, and all the logos are covered with white tarps. What do you suppose is going on. I know of at least 4 other stations that have done the same thing in the area.
The stations are still open and selling gas.

Ludicrous gibs!

They are afraid of all the boycott loonies out there, thats why they cover up the signs. I wouldn't want anyone **** with my livelyhood either. I like to call it gangster activism, Jesse Jackson style.HT SYSTEM-

For those who won't click the link...the article (and I didn't read all of it) indicated a lot of BP station owners are now actually buying gas from Shell, Sunoco, etc and so are trying to cut any ties with BP.George Grand wrote: »

I'm more interested in what the article doesn't say. Like if BP still gets royalties on gas regardless of who it's from per their contract with these franchised stations. If thats the case, it's meaningless.HT SYSTEM-

As the Gulf economy tanks and folks fall on hard times I wouldn't be surprised if there is violent backlash against BP - like shooting out BP signs or worse.

Of course not - but folks tend to act on emotion. Such acts are not improbable - that's all I'm saying.
Like rioting after your city's team wins a championship....I don't get it, but some folks are just dumb.
And shooting out signs of the company that ruined your livelihood - not beyond the realm of probability cuz some folks will vent that way.
Is it right or justified - no.

Well there are a whole lot of BP and Shell stations in my area. I've been noticing that the BP prices are much lower than Shell or Exxon for that matter.

Look for BP to 'merge' with one of the other big three before this is all over.[
-
I have yet to hear a plausible explanation for why a British corporation is drilling for oil off U.S. shores, or why we have their gas stations in our country ! What, Shell and Exxon-Mobil aren't enough to serve our needs without opening our resources and market to the Brits?? I didn't buy gas from BP before the leak fiasco, and I sure as Hell won't afterwards either!

They (BP) absorbed and took over Amaco a while back, they'll probably bring the Amaco name back now. -
The plausible answer as to why they are drilling offshore US is because of our free trade system - they were the highest bidder on MC Blk. 252 when it became available for leasing. The block is 5760 acres (9 sq miles). The US govt. awarded the lease to BP. There are a number of foreign corps exploring for oil & gas in the gulf.[

I've been buying BP lately. I rather give my money to the Brits than "our friends" the Saudi's. Shell oil is 50% owned by the Saudi Arabia government. Shell used to be the lest expensive gas around here but now BP in most places is 5 to 10 cents cheaper a gallon. I needed a reason to switch from Shell and now I have it. However I have no allegence to any oil company, whoever consistently provides the cheapest prices on regular 87 octane gas is who gets my business. -

Disaster in the Gulf aside (and don't go getting your panties in a bunch I'm concerned ahem Curt); what is getting PO'd is that gas prices here in Delaware are typically 15 to 20 cents less a gallon than PA. Not any more! What the heck is going on.
I would drive over to Jersey where the only thing cheap there IS gas but then we're talking mileage and a three dollare toll . . . doesn't work out in my families financial interest. -

That's the reason. The oil rights for all blocks are auctioned off to the highest bidder; Malaysia, etc.

I agree, this is not out of the realm of possibility. The $20 Billion BP paid the thug politicians in DC to cover damages will be a drop in the bucket when the whole scenario is finally over. Did we get it back when Goldman Sacks,Lehman, and other wall street firms pretty much lost half of their/our wealth ? Why is it they were not made to make the people whole ? This is what happens when you let government pick winners and losers.
As far as oil leases go,yeah, they bid on a lease, but uncle sam has the final word on where they can drill. Lets go back to the spill in Alaska. After that one, the oil companies lobbied for a cap on liabilility, 75 million, you've all heard that number in the news. The government agreed to this only with the oil companies conceeding to let the government tell them where they can drill. Bp could not drill in 5000 ft unless uncle sam said so. Bp actually applied to drill in 500 ft but uncle sam said no,drill here,in 5000 ft. Uncle sam has final word on the process in place, safety, and so on. If Bp was trying to cut corners,it was not without someone in government knowing about it. I'm not saying it's right, but uncle sam caps the liability, then changes the cap to infinity during the crisis. In essence, changing the rules in the middle of the game. The rule of law should apply even though BP stepped up to say they would cover clean up costs no matter how much. We still need the rule of law and hold those accountable who make such laws. Too bad our own government has excused themselves from any liability from lawsuits,or accountability in all this. Instead we got re-directed anger at a villian,BP, to burn at the stake. They maybe the villian in all this, thats not clear yet, but whats troubling for me anyway is most villians have a sidekick, in this case, that would be the government.HT SYSTEM-

I just read a an article that recommended they just sell out and leave the US market,
and just don't pay anyone. This is starting to look more to be the plan.
I don't know where they'd ever get enough money to pay for the mess they made anyway.
Let's hope the same people aren't put in charge of building
nuclear power plants. Bean counters seem to be running everything now.

Exactly....and when they do go belly up, the taxpayer foots the bill. Then I want to see them shell out taxpayer cash to the strip joints, that applied to BP for restitution, won't that be charming.HT SYSTEM-

Your right to do so for sure but may I ask if you ever determined if this was a BP owned store or a franchised one? You could be boycotting a neighbor with kids that are in school with your kids, just trying to put food on the table. That makes you feel good...privately ?
Kinda reminds me of the Salem witch hunts....don't know and don't care if your guilty, just burn 'em at the stake if BP signage is anywhere to be found.HT SYSTEM-

This has been my whole point during this boycotting of BP debate. As I said before, boycotting the local station isn't going to do anything. However an organized demonstration at various BP corporate headquarters will get their attention much better.
Me, as long as BP keeps their prices lower than the Shell or Exxons around here, that's where I'm buying my gas.
