HT Rear Speaker Placement
I am presently running my humble HT system as 3.1 but want to go 5.1. Problem is the sofa is all the way to the back wall. This is obviously less than ideal for the rear speakers. Be that as it may, what is the best way to aim the rear speakers? From above facing down? From the sides facing in? ?
Thanks

Iirc, side surrounds are the surrounds in a 5.1 setup. The rears (that go directly behind you) are 6.1/7.1?

I have the same setup. My rears are LSi15s so the mids and tweeters are above couch level. At one point I had them angled facing into the room, but now they are perpendicular to the couch and facing straight in. Also, since they are LSis they are left and right speakers. I have them reversed from the front LSi15 since this allows the side firing woofer to blast into the room, versus directly into the wall.
Oh yes, one final point. It works and sounds great.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

While semantically incorrect, many of us with 5.1 setups refer to the surrounds as the rears, since that is what they are.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

That's what I've always thought at first and believed, until I had made a post about it somewhere last year and was told otherwise.
No debate here, just wasn't sure about it but I always assumed the rears were part of a 5.1 setup, until then.Truck setup

The problem with calling the surround speakers the rears is a newbie could make a mistake and attach their 5.1 surround speakers to the rear output of the AVR, since they keep hearing the surrounds called rears. Then we do have a problem. I am just so used to calling my surrounds the rear speakers I do not even think about it.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Ideally, they should be mounted on the back wall, each speaker about 2-3 feet away from the side of the couch. They should also be about 2-3 feet above ear level, and angled towards, and slightly to the front of your ears.
