I cannot figure out how to "un-pause" it to get it to start backing up my HD. I've looked everywhere and cannot get it started. Everytime I plug it in, it just says paused.
If...

Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Might the drive be set on a timer to do backups? For example, maybe every night at midnight it makes a backup. So, since it's not actively backing up at the moment, it says paused. Check through all of the settings thoroughly. Oh, and I know it's a blow to our manliness, but if we both promise not to tell anyone, let's use the manual too. lol

No manual came with it and it's not on a timer.

I called Western Digital and they cannot figure it out. I was told to remove all the software and then remove the drive in the "device manager", problem is, I don't know what the device manager is, where to find it and how to remove the drive. Anyone? (how's that a blow to my manliness?) HAHAHAHA!

Once I remove everything I was told to shut down the pc, start it back up and then connect the drive and reinstall everything. If that doesn't work I need to send it in for replacement.

Right click on my computer, then go properties, then you should see device manager there under hardware. Once inside there, look under disc drives and you should see all drives listed. Right click again and remove hardware.

Nope, it's not there. Only two tabs that come up under properties are "General" and Shortcut", nothing else. I'm running XP if that helps.

I'm running XP on my work laptop and if you right click then you should see properties at bottom of the drop down box. A system properties box should pop up on your screen. In that box are 6 tabs, you need to click on Hardware. In hardware you will see a button for Device Manager. Also make sure you have admin rights also, which will help.

Go to Start, look for My Computer and just left click on it, it will show you all of your drives.

You can also click on Start, and click on Control Panel, click on Add Hardware & also in Control Panel click on Add/Remove Software that is right next to the Add Hardware button.
