Upgrading to BluRay

I finally feel the need for a bluray player. Crutchfield has the Sony BDP-S1000ES on sale for $199, shipping included, that's $500 off. The reviews I could find were very favorable for this player, so I ordered one. If I don't like it, I can send it back. My Denon DVD 2900 has served me well for almost 7 years, but new DVD's don't seem to have the resolution of the originals I purchased or rented a few years ago. Anybody have opinions about this Sony bluray player?

Haven't seen that one in particular, but I have played around with one of their lower end models and they're pretty solid. Can't imagine you can go wrong with a Sony, considering they kinda' came up with the format. ;)

Are you using an upconverter? Most of my new dvd's look fantastic through upconversion.

But I still ordered a new Blu Ray player:D There is also the Oppo BDP 80.

I do not have an upconvertor. When I purchased my first Sony XBR LCD rear projection I was able to compare the Sony DVD9000ES with the Denon DVD2900 using Superbit DVD's before the purchase. The 9000ES was very impressive and had very few visible artifacts with minimal jitter, which made the XBR's upconversion more than adequate. The Denon also did an excellent job with artifacts and had no jitter. The price point made the sale. I also considered the Denon 1610 bluray, but $400 entry level was just seemed high. Its now on sale for $330 and will be considered if the Sony doesn't work out. Most reviews I've found say the Denon has very slow load times and is bare bones. My current set is a Sony 60XBR950 LCD rear projection that is 720p capable and it will be around for a few more years.

I own the S1000ES on my upstairs rig and it's a solid performer, no complaints here so far and might I add, it's very fast on boot-up.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Sony ES in that price range! Also, regarding newer DVDs....the question would be where are you getting yours from....renting, Netflix, etc. Because I have found that many rentals are MORE compressed than the ORIGINAL DVD so that they can fit everything or most everything on ONE disc. This affects the quality regardless of what player you are using. When you try to 'upconvert' a more compressed disc there is a noticeable 'difference' between that and the original because of the missing data!

    Good Luck!

I currently own Sony BDP-S350 and BDP-S570. Both have a great picture and sound. I highly recommend Sony in this case.

I had the top of the line Denon laserdisc player for almost 15 years. I believe the model was the 2200 and was the last produced by Denon. It was an unused demo at the store I installed for and they practically gave it to me. I sold it and all but a few laserdisc's, because it was hard to find recent releases. The prices of DVD's and the progressive scan of newer players killed LD.

I was wondering the same with Bluray. I just ordered the single disc version of 2012. The two disc version has the extra features and music which I usually ignore.

Not to derail this thread, but how would you compare the PQ of the 2 Sonys?
