3D Venting

So after seeing toy story 3 yesterday and watching the trailers in the beginning I was a little annoyed. Not at the movie itself which I saw in non 3d. But that almost every single movie coming out now is 3d. I know avatar changed the way we use and see 3d but still. As much as I love 3D this is just getting stupid. Not every single movie has to come out in 3d wether it be a animated one or a normal movie. Just stupid and me venting.

My eye doctor recently told me that I can't actually see 3-D... so it's all wasted on me anyway. Still, the increased ticket prices will definitely keep me away, as I'd rather just wait and pay a little more for a movie on Blu-ray to watch in my home.

Exactly, that is what Home Theater is all about! I much prefer buying the movie and watch it in the comfort of my home with the loved ones and at a much lower cost

I think 3D is there to stay and will definitely take over conventional movie type. It would be stupid for them to make the conventional over 3 D and yet maybe the mass prefer 3D if not it'll die, another reason to move away from conventional movie (so they can prevent 3D to die).

What is there to really to vent about? they are giving you the consumer a choice.
3D or 2D pick one and enjoy.

If price tag is higher for 3D I'm sure they would not charge less for 2D so there isn't really a choice there. I can see some people getting choke but technology goes on, if they give you the choice they could jopardize 3D's life. I am convince if Bluray had manged to get DVD obsolete I am convinved there would be a lot of choke people but then BluRay would be a lot more successfull.

How is there still not a choice? I'm not talking price. you still have a choice in how you want to watch your movie. Personally I believe the Bluray 3D format will be the last of mas produced discs. DVD already has its foot in the grave along with CD's, and the rope is already pulling on Bluray and we have yet to see the first real bluray 3D disc.

The CD section alone along with DVD's at BestBuy have shrunk a bunch in the last year alone, and it will continue to do so. Even your video stores will be just about gone by the end of the year, and that has nothing to do with the economy..

I'm not saying they will go away for good but there will be a day that getting your CD's will be like getting your music on vinyl.. very few places will sell it and if they do it will be slim pickings...

    Except online that is..

At current ticket prices, it's hard to see how taking a whole family out to the movies is more expensive than an Amazon blu-ray. Even two tickets can cost more. You get to keep the movie. No spilled soft drink sticky floors, too tall people in front, seat way off to the side, babysitter for the kids, outrageously priced pop corn, long waits in line, etc.

The only thing is letting the hype pass so by the time you see a movie, no one is really talking about it anymore. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, not getting caught up in the hype. And you'll always have the best seat in the house.

I don't think DVDs are going anywhere any time soon. I don't know about the US but I've learned Canada is postponing going digital alone and some providers will still provide analogue since the majority of Canadians haven't bought HD sets yet. I don't see DVD going away any time soon unless they pull the same stunt as they did during the war of HD DVD and BluRay. BB had a nasty attitude and are a big portion of HD DVD demise and if they dare pull that stunt again with DVD, I could forcast the death of BB just as much as the DVDs. The industry has to realize that they can not toy and impose on consumers like this. Consumers are the one that should decide what stays and goes, NOT the industry. The industry has to bend over consumers demands if they want to stay alive and make money otherwise, they die and we forget about them pretty quickly (how many strong and powerfull businesses has disappeared through the passing of times ). Businesses regardless of their power must adapt to consumers, NOT the other way around ;)

I don't care for 3D in live action - including Avatar. Now, when its 3D animation, I think it adds a depth that animation has been lacking. I caught a midnight show to TS3 and thought the 3D was very tasteful, brought depth to the scenes and I honestly forgot I was watching 3D.

I agree, not everything 'has' to be in 3D....this is a FAD and will pass. Eventually Directors will settle down and decide whether 3D or 2D is the better venue for the Blu-rays and films. Part of this is not only that TV makers want to sell NEW technology but also the desire to help slumping ticket sales at Multiplexes. I mean....Movie houses are not making a killer profit for exactly the reasons cheddar mentions above.

The SOLUTION....IMAX 3D theaters....and MORE and MORE of them. You have to offer something that the Home Viewer does NOT have!

Do I care? No, not really.

DVD already has its foot in the grave along with CD's,

CD sales pulled in $4.2 BILLION last year.

Downloads of single songs brought in $1.2 billion.

Downloads of full albums was at $763 million.

DVD sales were at $213 million, $218 million if you include music DVD's.

    Vinyl was at $60 million.

There is no listing for Blu-ray.

Conclusion, CD's aren't going away for a long, long time.

    Well,

That's pretty interesting information Jesse. I wasn't ready to throw away my CDs or my player in any case...ha,ha! In fact, I've been working on buying gear to mellow the digital harshness of my CD rig for the last year or so....getting 'closer' and 'closer' to good sound!

To me avatar was stunning in 3d and I sort of do not like watching it without it. But to each there own.

Well, it looks like Joe Public doesn't exactly get all the negatives for 3D yet. I was reading some movie release news and IIRC, TS3 made over 100 million bucks on its opening weekend, a record for Pixar. And around 60% of that was 3D tickets.

I'm not really against all this success for movie theaters, however they market to get the crowds in. As successful movies mean more content sooner for blu-ray and my home theater...:D.

I'll chime in on this one. I don't like 3d, because I already wear glasses, and glasses over glasses is never fun, as anyone with poor vision who has taken a shop class knows.

Something about the combination of the glasses and the 3d image also give me terrible headaches, and make my fiancee vomit. :D

End result: we don't go to the movies as much now. I don't mind. I enjoy sprawling out in my spot with a beer and some FRESH popcorn. I also could care less if I get to see something when it first opens. Most of the movies now are so mediocre that they don't merit the cost of the theatre anyway.

Now that I'm back in the USA, I've been out looking at all the 3D stuff. I will say that I agree with the OP. As I've mentioned before I think it's a great gimmick and will hold it's on, just not in my HT. I can only hope they don't try to force it down our throats, and continue to bring quality 2D releases. Heck, there is still not much 3D content out there yet with the release of all the 3D gear so it still sucks.

My problem with these movies being made for 3-D is that it means a lot of them will have the gimmicky "ooh, look... it's coming right at you!" stuff, which will stand out like a **** in a punchbowl if you watch it in 2-D. At least Avatar used it in a non-gimmicky way that translated well to either format... but I fear that 3-D movies will always tend to push that gimmick, making their translation to 2-D kind of obvious.

I can't see the 3-D effect either way... I just don't want filmmakers throwing stuff at the screen just because they can.
