Looking at Marantz Receiver SR7002/SR8002

I am looking at getting a new receiver since my Yamaha RXV2600 is having problems and I am pondering on getting it fixed. Does anyone own or has heard these Marantz receivers? I see good reviews online but I would like to here from a fellow polkie. They are half price online most likely because they are already a couple years old but they have all the latest codecs and on the audio side I hear they sound great. Not sure if I do go through with the purchase if I should spend the extra $300 for the SR8002(125w/ch) since the SR7002 haves 110w/ch and the Yamaha I would be replacing haves 130w/ch. Any feedback would be appreciated!:) Thanks!

I haven't heard either, but there have been reliability problems with older Marantz units, that I think have been addressed in the newer models.
What I have heard are the SR4003 and the SR6003 as demos. And I can say that I 'liked' what I heard there...though they were mostly hooked up to either Dali or KEF speakers which are usually pretty good quality?
I'm sure that the slightly older units must have the same or similar Marantz 'house' sound...which is pretty musical for an AVR.
Good Luck!

I listened to the Marantz 7002, and have been contemplating getting it, but going another way now (Rotel or Arcam pre/pro). Marantz sounds better than the Denon or Onkyo, better if you do a lot of 2 chan listening. Not as many bells and whistles as the aforementioned, but better sound.Polk RTi A7's FrontPolk CSi A4 CenterPolk Tsi 100's SurroundOnkyo TX-RZ50:)Oppo BDP 83 (Collecting dust)MIT Terminator 3 Speaker CableMIT Terminator 2 IC's (Oppo 2 chan)Signal Cable HT TWOEpson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080Hisense 55 U8GBelkin PF 60 Power Center

Any thoughts ? I listen to much more music than HT. Would either of these be a upgrade over my Yamaha RXV2600?

Yes, they would, you are like me, more music than HT. So I would go with the Marantz.:DPolk RTi A7's FrontPolk CSi A4 CenterPolk Tsi 100's SurroundOnkyo TX-RZ50:)Oppo BDP 83 (Collecting dust)MIT Terminator 3 Speaker CableMIT Terminator 2 IC's (Oppo 2 chan)Signal Cable HT TWOEpson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080Hisense 55 U8GBelkin PF 60 Power Center -
A lot of polkies would recommend a pre to drive your avr so save the $300 and put it toward a Wired 4 Sound pre.HT in Progress

I would then have to get another amp or two to drive my center and surounds. I do not have the coin or room for that now but maybe sometime in the future would consider it. Right now I have a yamaha avr causing distortion in one channel intermitantly and it is driving me crazy when I see the needle on the meter of my carver fluctuate wildly .HT System

Marantz has an excellent reliability and output rating. my marantz will bench the claimed WPC all channels driven with headroom left to spare. i also know alot of people who have had marantz receivers for 5-30 years and they still work perfectly. i can't say anything about those models specifically all i know is i love the marantz i have and based on what i've heard others say i think they are very good receivers.
oh and btw, yamaha is notorius for exaggerated WPC ratings so i hear. -
I thought the short list was between the 8003 and SR7002. My reocommendation would be to go for the 7002 and save the $300 to put toward a quality pre.HT in Progress

a receiver has a pre in it......

scratch the pre and read amp. My apologies for the error / confusion. Re the OP wpc question, I auditioned the Marantz SR5004 (90 wpc) at a local audio showroom a few months ago and it had plenty of power to drive the 5.1 speakers on display. This audition is what turned my upgrade focus from HK to Marantz. I will go back this week to see if the setup included an amp or if the SR5004 was driving the amazing SQ on its own.HT in Progress

I would do the SR8002, little more power, plus feature set. You will have it for a long time. And at the end, $300 more goes a long way in the would shoulda...Polk RTi A7's FrontPolk CSi A4 CenterPolk Tsi 100's SurroundOnkyo TX-RZ50:)Oppo BDP 83 (Collecting dust)MIT Terminator 3 Speaker CableMIT Terminator 2 IC's (Oppo 2 chan)Signal Cable HT TWOEpson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080Hisense 55 U8GBelkin PF 60 Power Center

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I am still trying to figure out if it is worth fixing my Yamaha. It is a good receiver but I heard on this forum and others that the Marantz is alot warmer and detailed for music.(Better for my RTi12's)I think I am going with a Marantz for now. Just trying to figure "which receiver do I get" The SR7002 and SR8002 are the exact same size and dimensuons and weight. So I quess the 8002 gets more power from the toroidal transformer while the 7002 haves the EI transformer. Probably makes a big differance. If I knew the 8002 had bigger better caps then I might go with that. Since I will have my Carver amp driving my fronts I do not think I will need the extra power of the 8002 for my center and surrounds.Just my luck I now see a couple of SR8400 and SR8500's just go on ebay. Decisions, decisions!

I've had both the 7002 and now the 8002, I liked the SR7002, but I love the SR8002!! it just seems to have a more refined sound quality and more dynamic range with better power transformer. It cost me a bunch to upgrade since I got $300 less for the first Marantz after a year of use plus the SR8002 was new and costly, but worth it. Amazon has the 8002 for a grand new now.
