Hey, I saw something on my local CL, and they look like Monitor 5's to me, but this guy claims they came out before the Monitor series. They do have really old labels on the back. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks, Christopher

I just got off the phone with him. Really nice guy! He said they might be peerless tweets. I really have no experience with any Polks of this vintage, and I'm guessing these are the original monitor series? Any help with that Doro?

They are Peerless and yes, it's the original Monitor series. It says "Model 5" on the rear which is why he may say it's before the Monitor series. It really doesn't matter as it's basically a Monitor 5, period.

The PR's aren't the first run but the clues for original are the recessed velcro tabs for the grill and the raised, light colored cardboard surrounds on the driver mounting ring. The PR would usually have this as well and may or may not be a paper cone. This is a later original or the PR's were replaced, which is highly unlikely.

I would immediately replace the binders with Vampire Wire BP-HEX as I'm sure the originals will break/crack eventually. Otherwise, keep them stock and wonderful.

    +1,

I just picked up a set of Monito 5s with the peerless tweeter from a member...am pretty psyched about returning to the U.S. to hear those on my new/old NAD integrated? Looking for that 'peerless' magic...which is true vintage Polk!

Now with a pair of SDAs, a set of Monitor 70s based HT, some Peerless Monitors. The only thing Polk left to buy are some LSI bookshelves...then wait for the new Polk models...When I return home..I'll be pretty Polked out!

    Enjoy your originals....GREAT price!

Sure thing. Pictures are long overdue! Though there are tons of me in the PRC...Including one in front of a fairly famous Italian Restaurant in the Italian Concession of Tianjin watching the world cup, yesterday (for those who do not know Tianjin is the Port city of Beijing about 90 miles away.....bullet train=30 minutes. It was a Treaty Port after the Opium War...1842. But enough of the 'egghead' stuff....)

    Pics to come!

Very nice on both sets of speakers. I love my 5B's in the office rig, stellar. SDA 2A's for $100? Great deal

I like my model 5 speakers. I must have a later version. Only 1 fuse and knobs for mounting the grills. $12.50 thrift store find, very dusty, any ideas on cleaning them?

Furniture polish on the wood and a damp cloth everywhere else. No solvents or cleaners are recommended by Polk to clean the vinyl parts of SDA's, so the same should hold true for your monitors.
