Question on Surround Speakers

Hi all,
Here is what I currently have:
- Pioneer VSX-1019AH-K 7-Channel A/V Receiver
- LG BD 370 Network Blu-ray Disc Player
- Polk Audio Monitor 70 3-Way Floorstanding Speakers
- Polk Audio CS2 Center Channel Speaker
- Premier Acoustic PA-120 Titanium Subwoofer
- Polk OWM3 Surround Speakers (rear)
I am planning to add two more speakers as 'side speakers' to make my system a complete 7.1 Surround System and am planning to get a pair of Monitor 40s. I have two questions for you:
1) Is this a good decision from a speaker selection perspective?
2) I have challenges in placing these speakers on the sides. Is it OK if I place them adjacent to the Tower Speakers in the front?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Well technically, in 5.1, you should have your surrounds to your sides right now. When go 7.1, you add rear surrounds.
your speaker selection should work fine, being that the surround info is mostly ambient anyway for effect.Polk RTi A7's FrontPolk CSi A4 CenterPolk Tsi 100's SurroundOnkyo TX-RZ50:)Oppo BDP 83 (Collecting dust)MIT Terminator 3 Speaker CableMIT Terminator 2 IC's (Oppo 2 chan)Signal Cable HT TWOEpson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080Hisense 55 U8GBelkin PF 60 Power Center -

+1, most importantly though, make sure you have "room" for a 7.1. Adding 2 more speakers in a small room will do you no good. A well placed/setup 5.1 will outperform a cramped up 7.1 anyday.

Hi Ric and Jeff,
Thank you for your response.
My living room is pretty large, so it is OK to go for a 7.1 from a space perspective.
I finally went for a Monitor 30, instead of a 40. Now I have these as the rear surrounds and my OWM3 Surround Speakers as my side surrounds. It all works very well now.
Earlier sounds coming from the sides were mixed with the rear surrounds or the front speakers. Now I can clearly hear the sounds from the side surrounds when I play HD or Blue Ray. It is incredible!
Thanks a lot for your response once again. I agree about the small room thing. One of my friends has it all in a small space and it is mostly noise. I also understand about Ric's comment about surround sound being ambient.
