Polk RTI A9 crossover settings?
What are you guys with the A9's using for a crossover setting?
I've read many that are crossing them at the THX-required 80Hz, but this is too high for the A9's IMO as they are good down to 30Hz (-3dB).
Why not cross them over at a lower 40Hz and let the three-way speaker do what it's designed to do? My A6 center is crossed over at 60Hz. I have 6 surround speakers (9.2 setup), All R20's, crossed over at 80Hz.
This is with using two PSW505 subwoofers, btw...
Just curious what others are doing and why...

I too would like to know.
I have my A9s crossed at 50hz -
Full range/large. Don't think they'll hit 30hz.

I cross my A9's at 80hz and they won't hit 30hz with any authority. That's what a subwoofer is meant for.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

So at 80Hz, why go with the A9's? Why not just the A7's?
I'm not criticizing -- just curious? -
Because I had a choice of A9 or A7....I chose the bigger pair but the A7 would be every bit as good and capable as the bigger brother. Bigger isn't always better and I think the RTiA7 is a better choice for HT, if not even smaller since HT reference is 80hz.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. So you don't have any subs?

...but if you set your speakers to LARGE, the subs are not being used. Are you running a double bass system than?

I'd run them large or at the lowest crossover point your AVR will allow.
-
My Pioneer AVR will let you run large speakers and subs.

Had a Denon 2805, and when I had my speakers set to full-range my subwoofer was still active
It sounded better to me this way, which allowed me to tune the subwoofer a bit lower and focus only on the deeper bass frequencies since my mains had plenty of punch/bass.Truck setup

For both of you this is a double bass "feature" and is not recommended by most in the field. Pioneer referes to it as LFE+MAIN, Onkyo refers to it as "Double Bass" and I'm not sure what Denon refers to it as, but it's there.
Read the following blog post by Chris Kyriakakis, founder of Audyssey. Read the full blog post, but here's a snippet:TRUE seems to be the Pioneer notation for what others call LFE+Main or Double Bass. It's not recommended at all because it ends up with overlapping bass in the subwoofer and satellites.
I recommend you set your speakers to Small and sub to On.

So if you are running both LARGE and subs, then you are overlapping frequencies. In fact, due to many factors such as phase control, LFE circuitry in your subs, wiring etc. you could be producing bass frequencies at a slight offset, enough to cause muddiness and lack of tight, controlled bass.
This is why I would never recommend running the A9's at full range, but rather use bass management to crossover certain frequencies to the subwoofer. The question is, what is that point? -
Crossed over at 50HZ and using dual SVS PB12/Plus 2 subs.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I prefer that small overlap, at least I'll know I'm not missing out on any in-between frequencies and I can better tune my sub to pair with my speakers the way I want to.
Again, it's all about how you like it. If it sounds good, why not? Only you can make that call....so if I were you I'd experiment with things. But I wouldn't be so quick to jump on things and make it sound as if someone's right or wrong here.
There's a reason why subwoofers+avr's have phase switches/dials for LPF/etc.

I set my system up to what sounds best to me not what sounds best to Chris Kryiakakis.
Give it a try and if you don't like it change it. Set it up to your preference not someone else. -
I'd go low, 40 - 50Hz for HT use, there is no need for those woofers if you don't move some air with them. Then again, I don't have any, but my prior gen RTi10's were all but fullrange, no problems. Hit hard and heavy if properly setup and placed.

The "double bass" is a feature that I did not personally like. However with my Pioneer unit you can still run the mains full range (large) and a sub while not using the "double bass" feature.
Do what sounds best to you and you will always be much more pleased.:)
PS...Run them large. -

I guess I'm confused. Pioneer's LFE+MAIN is a double bass feature... -
I've run my A9's at a lower xover but the blend is simply better at 80hz. No, your answer is wrong.
