Just got a Cary SLP 308 tube pre yesterday. This is my fist tube pre and I'm very happy with it. I'm currently using it with a Carver M1.0t amp that was gone though by Rita about year or so ago. Sounds great and seems to respond well to tube rolling as I have tried a pair of Sylvania 12AT7WA short black plats with a dual post O getter and a pair of Bugle Boy 12AU7 tubes with it. As the norm for at least my taste I liked the Bugle Boys for there warm mids. But I'm currently running the Sylvanias as I only have one pair of Bugle Boys (if anyone has some Bugle Boys let me know!!!).

I very happy with it and I cant wait until the fall when I plan on buying a pair of PrimaLuna prolog 6 mono blocks.
If life had more tubes it would be a lot smoother.

Ok, I've read it before, and, yeah, I could use search, but for the sake of conversation... what does "tube rolling" mean? You seem to be very much into tubes. I might as well start learning, 'cause I'm afraid I'll be going down that road eventually... :)

Tube rolling is were you try different tubes in your tube gear. Each tube will sound different depending on who made the tube and what kind of materials were used in the tube.

It's time to move on from Carver dude and the SLP308 is a pretty nice pre-amp. The build and chassis is very nice.

Tube pre + SS power = best of both worlds

Glad you are enjoying your first venture with tubes.

Going from your Carver to Primaluna monoblocks will be a nice upgrade. You're gonna have tubes coming out your arse! ;)

Thanks! Do you get fairly consistent performance from tubes of the same model and manufacturer?

Ern Dog. This isn't my first venture that started with a little Jolida 202 integrated amp. I just liked it so much that I decided to go to tube separates so I can get more power. Trust me I already have a lot of tubes and the gf isn't to keen of anymore :)

I do like the SS for its control of the bass but I like a more laid back highs that tubes in general bring. So IMOA I like running tubes with a set of stereo subwoofers.
