The wife & I are talking about heading north for a summer Canadian vacation the week before Memorial day. I don't have a clue about where to go in Canada. She had mentioned staying on the Canadian side & visiting Niagara Falls & taking it from there. We're also taking our 16yr old son along too so he needs to be kept engaged & not too bored. Any suggestions!

Canada is kinda big. I only really know some about the western 2 provinces (BC & Alberta). I'm guessing since you mentioned Niagara, you planning on Eastern Half?

I know there are quite a few Canadians that post regularly from Quebec & Ontario.

Niagara Falls is 100% touristic. Cool, but pricey.

If in the falls, check out some vineyards.

Most of Quebec is off limits until you learn french. Montreal is still open to you though.

It's sad that I can't think of any cool places to check out, at this moment.

How long are you defecting for?

Canadian polkies include: me, Willow, technokid, FTGV, ummm.... Except GV, I've listed the three in the Ottawa area.

Hey Phil, if you and your family are into fishing/boating Lake of the Woods would be nice....bring a GPS though. I really think that is all that Canada has to offer to vacationers is nature...we have a tonne of it.

Pearsall, are you aware that you pretty much need a passport to go to Canada these days? Some States offer an 'enhanced' drivers license that will get you through customs/immigration, but I don't know if yours does. Better check into it before you go. This would apply to your 16y old as well.

Lake Louise or Northern and Walleye fishing in Manitoba.

Niagra Falls is an unspectacular tourist trap (last time I was there).

Montreal is a great city, I used to go there often.
    It's about 5 1/2 hour drive from NYC. :D

Come to Montreal, don't worry about speaking french, you'll get along just fine, there are plenty of english speaking people here. A three hour drive from Montreal puts you in Quebec City...this is a must see, again, the french people are friendly and you will not have any problems.

If you need more info, just shoot me a pm. Btw, I'm in Mississauga, Ontario right now for a couple of days.

Well, it depens what you are after; museums or other similar activities, site visits, campimg, sport activities etc.. How long will your vacation be, your mode of travel, are you flying or you prefer to drive and visit multiple places along the way?

Quebec is not really out of bound. If you take Quebec city, it is a must see, lots of history and festivities. Les plaines d'Abraham are just beautifull. Lots of good restaurants fine cuisine and actually you don't have to break the bank. Quebec is very touristic and people living there know how to threath them, it is part of their lifestyle. People come from worldwide to visit Quebec (we actually had our honeymoon in Quebec in 95 (second wife and I).

Montreal is definitely multi lingual and cultural. Having been raised on the south shore of Montreal it wouldn't appeal to me to spend my vacation there but many vacationers from all over the world are attracted to Montreal. There are also the Laurentian park that is very appealing for a summer vacation. The Isle ST Helene and Notre Dame were very famous during the Expo 67, it still host la ronde if you like attraction parcs.

Here are few activities I found for you:

Thanks for all the great feedback & suggestions. It looks like we have some homework to do. We're probably only going to be on the road for 4-5 days so I'll have to maximize the miles & time. Coming from the Philly area I'd like to keep it around an 8hr one way trip.

    Great clip Joe...thanks.

I would suggest that if you comming to Canada out of Philly, that you travel up Interstate I 81 through Watertown New York and cross into Canada at Gananoque Ontario. This crossing is about 3 hours drive east of Toronto and Just East of Kingston Ontario which is a nice place. They have a 1000 island boat cruise which runs out of Gananoque which is quite interesting. From there you can travel east to Ottawa where there is a lot to see. Ottawa is not far maybe 2-3 hour drive east if kingston. Spend maybe 2 days there and drive Further east to Montreal. Given that this trip is only going to be 5 days, I would think Montreal would be your last stop. Even so, You would have a nice trip going to these places.

Nice itinary Reno. Kingston's georgous in the summer and so is Gananaque. They also both have strong military roots, Most of my military technical training was in Kingston. Lovely memories of the younger days dancing with so many beautifull young university ladies from across the country  I feel so nostalgic now.

pearsall001, I believe your young 16 year old man would definitely not be bored in Kingston ;) Just let him hang around the marina. I think the nurse school still exist there too

I believe that for the amount of time he can spend in Canada, Kingston and maybe Ottawa but would be too much to go down to Montreal (yes, not that much driving between Kingston Ottawa or Kingston Montreal but you have to think of the return trip).

There's an old saying around here: There are three ways you can leave Alert, as a chunk, a drunk or a hunk. With pretty much all-you-can-eat buffet meals, $2.50 drinks and a great workout facility it's no surprise how that saying came to be. While resisting gourging remains a challenge substituting bar nights for gym nights has gone pretty smoothly, with an added incentive of a free t-shirt for an equivalent of 500km of exercise, I'll be keeping fit and having fun in no time!

pearsall001, are you in for it! Didn't you say you wanted to visit Canada ;):p
