I scored an Onkyo TX-SR608 for $250 on Newegg to replace my Pioneer VSX-815 and am now looking for a new pair of Floor Speakers. I have a Klipsch Synergy-12 Subwoofer that was handed down to me that has been serving me well but I think it's time to upgrade my puny Sony SSF-5000 speakers.

I was thinking of grabbing a pair of Monitor 70's on eBay but was curious if anybody had another suggestion?

I'm currently running 2.1 and my primary use is music.

    Congrats,

The 608 is a nice receiver, but it is not the most 'musical' of receivers. Its real strength is HT, which it can do very well. The M70s would be your cheapest bet these days and the Klipsch sub can certainly fill in the low end, at least on movies, quite well. It's a little slower to react with fast musical passages.

I'd say you'd be happy with 2 x M-70s and that sub with your current AVR.

You could also think about two Rti-A3 bookshelves with that sub. The A3s have a bit more detail in their highs than the M series if that matters to you.

I'm sure more people will chime in here?

    Good Luck!

Lots of discussion on the Monitor 70s lately. If you insist on a tower, they're a great price right now. Otherwise, RTi/RTiA's are nice... (but will eventually choke your receiver)

I'm currently on a budget and don't have a steady income of cash (student) at the moment so am looking to get off with a deal. The reason I brought up the Monitor 70's is yes, I've seen a lot a talk about them, but primarily the great price Polk has up on eBay. If I could land the pair for under $300 (shipped) I think that would possibly be one of my best bets in terms of upgrading my current Sony SSF-5000 floor speakers. The RTi series just seems to be out of my budget. I remember Fry's had the RTi8's going for cheap but I didn't have the money to jump on it at the time.

Despite it not being the most musical of receivers, I couldn't let myself pass it up at the low price I snatched it at. I do plan on doing a Home Theater when I move soon, but the primary purpose as of right now is mainly music/videos as it is hooked up to my computer.

On the note of my receiver choking; how well do you think it could push the M-70's? Should I bother with Bi-Amping when the day comes?

Thank you very much for the replies!

I would definetly get something in the RTi line. You already have a sub so the RTiA3 bookshelfs would be great for you...then you could move them to surround duty when you build you home theater down the road.

I recently listened to a bunch of speakers at a local shop and the RTi line sounded great to my ears. I just bought a pair of RTi8's...and coming off of a pair of Monitor 50's the RTi's are a good improvement.

Email or call up sounddistributors.com, they are a little flexible on there prices and was able to give me a deal on the newest stuff. Onecall.com has some good deals also.

As an RTi owner, if music is what you're primarily using the system for, get the Monitor 70's over the RTi8's. The RTi8's are a little on the bright side, which make them great for HT, but a little harsh for music.

Aside from that, music is best played through full range tower speakers...the full range counter-part of the RTi8's (RTi12 or RTiA9) are so expensive, and for that kind of money that you'd be better served by snagging a pair of LSi15's...which are amongst the most musical speakers in the market.

    Thank you for the replies!

Might I add I'm on a rather small budget (trying to stay under $300).

I think I'm going to set on the Monitor 70's in the end unless I found a pair of RTi8's for an amazing price. Like I said in above post, I remember when Frys had them at what..$149/each? Damn I wish I could of grabbed that! :(

But regardless, I saw a bid on Polk Direct's eBay store for the M-70's close at like..$230 a day or so ago so I'm hoping I can snatch a deal like that and hopefully be happy in the end. :)

I'm keeping my eyes open and am 100% open to any other opinions!

    Thanks a lot!

Good luck on getting the Monitor 70's. They are a fine speaker and will work well with the Onkyo.
They are a great choice with your budget and existing system.

Thank you very much! Hopefully eBay brings me well!

PM sent! Thanks for the heads up! If this turns out being a good lead I may go with these over the Monitor 70's. Will more than likely get more for my money (no shipping, etc.)

    :)

How did you do that??? I'm seeing $419 currently, down from $599.
