R300s or Monitor 70

Right now I'm looking at the Monitor 70s on sale for 150 dollars. However, I can get a pair of R300s for 150 dollars as well.
Here is what I'm wondering though:
The Monitor 70s take up to 275 watts (I'm guessing RMS?) while the R300s take up to 125. If I'm running them off only the AV unit I'm never goign to get anywhere close to this power. How would I ever really power the Monitor 70s to take full advantage of them? I get the general feeling that a lot of people say it's not even worth it to buy an amplifier for the speakers (I'm not sure why) and say to just get better speakers but why would I get better speakers that obviously need more power to sound good?
I'd really like the Monitor 70s but if I need an amp to really push them to their potential I'd like to know the recommended RMS/price of it. If I need an amp to get the full potential of the R300s I'd like the full price of an amp of that as well that I'd need because if the amp to push a Monitor 70 is way too expensive I'll probably just buy the R300.
Anyway thanks for the help in advance!

Welcome to the club!
Don't pay that much attention to the wattage rating on the speaks. The 70s are better speakers, get them if the cost is the same. MHO"Don't forget to change your politician. They are like diapers they need to be changed regularly, and for the same reason."
