I'd heard the release date was moved to June 5th from June 10th.

I happened to be in CC today getting T2 Extreme and the new Bond movie and my brother-in-law was looking at CDs. Well St. Anger was out on the rack so either I read the release date wrong or CC is selling it a day early here. If you like Metalllica, check it out, it comes with a DVD of them recording it. I've only gotten through the first two songs but its sounds good, more like old school Metallica, and the DVD of them performing in the studio is cool as hell.

This CD couldn't be more horrible.

I'm sorry to say this, but this is coming from a very big Metallica fan. That band died for me when Load came out. I still have a tremendous respect for the band, but I'm able to admit that they aren't my bag anymore and I'm not going to buy mediocre albums just because I'm a fan of their old music.

James got over most of his personal ****, and I'm sorry to say it, but his personal **** is what made Metallica what they were.

I personally believe that Metallica is not being true to themselves as musicians at this point, but if they feel they are then I guess I'll take them at their word. It still doesn't change my perception of the band. I understand growing up and things changing, but I also think it changed the band from what made them great to what is now making them look like any other 'nu-metal' outfit out there today.

Why is Metallica touring with Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, and Mudvayne? None of those bands have one ounce of honesty in their music. The only band on the Summer Sanitarium that has any consitently honest music is the Deftones and this is what the lead singer Chino had to say about this **** tour:
DEFTONES Singer Slams SUMMER SANITARIUM Tourmates, KORN Frontman - May 29, 2003

DEFTONES frontman Chino Moreno spoke to Revolver magazine about the group's stint on the upcoming Summer Sanitarium trek. "A big problem for me was opening for LIMP BIZKIT and LINKIN PARK, two bands that wouldn't exist if it weren't for me, straight up!" the singer is quoted as saying in the magazine's August 2003 issue. "But in the end I'm seriously energized and I'm not going out there to make friends and kick it."

Regarding the tour's headliners, Moreno said, "METALLICA have a vast catalog. But live? Motherfuckers just stand there and play. We're gonna rock out their ****. We're gonna blow that **** up."

In the same interview, Chino talked about DEFTONES' lyrical approach and took an opportunity to slam KORN frontman Jonathan Davis, saying that "As [KORN] go on, it's the same things — bad childhoods and mean moms. It gets old after awhile. How old is Jonathan? Thirty years old? How long has it been since he lived with his parents? Try to go somewhere else. If you're genuine and write about whatever is drawing the emotion now, you can't be **** with."

You can call those comments cocky, but I hate to say it...it's :p SAD BUT TRUE:p .

Getting back to the original point...

If you just want completely contrived and dis-honest crap music than by all means buy this album. If you want heartfelt music that actually has meaning then search for other music....or buy an old Metallica album. I guess if you're into the same ole' Nu-Metal crap you'll love this album.....

    My final comment:

This is a band I wish would have just hung it up when they were on top. I'd have much more respect for them as a whole rather than just one faction of their careers like I do now. It's too bad....I really hate saying that.

    Dave

(I realize this is all subjective, but I'm just being honest about how I feel)

Well I heard St. Anger on the radio today......that was the worst Metallica song I have ever heard. And this comes from a band who I thought their low point was "I Disappear" from Mission Impossible 2.

Oh well Back to Master of Puppets, and Kill 'Em All.

From a thread at the PE forum:

Has anyone else heard Metallica - St. Anger yet?
OMG!!!! Can you say audible distortion? I extracted one of the songs into Cool Edit Pro to take a look. Not only was the waveform completely flat, scanning revealed a laughable number of clipped samples.

    Left Right
    Min Sample Value: -32768 -32768
    Max Sample Value: 32767 32767
Peak Amplitude: 0 dB 0 dB
    Possibly Clipped: 44928 28374
    DC Offset: .021 -.001
Minimum RMS Power: -70.55 dB -87.02 dB
Maximum RMS Power: -4.35 dB -4.91 dB
Average RMS Power: -9.11 dB -9.68 dB
Total RMS Power: -8.86 dB -9.32 dB
Actual Bit Depth: 16 Bits 16 Bits

Using RMS Window of 50 ms

Yet another victim of the mastering studio and poor "executive producer" decisions.
I'm a fan from way back in their early days, but with only slight exaggeration, I think white noise would be more pleasant to listen to than this.

Burdette, what the hell does all that mean?

I got the album yesterday and have to say that I'm VERY dissapointed. I'm a HUGE Metallica fan and this was not worth waiting 6 years for! Hell I'm still waiting for a good album after the Black album! If these are the kind of lyrics that Hetfield writes when he's clean then he should think twice about it... JK...

The sound quality is pretty terrible. My Dyn's tore it a new a-hole and pretty much made it sound like the crappy recording it is.

I've heard a few times that when Metallica records albums that they TRY to make it sound like a live show. Since the beginning their bread and butter has been playing live and they have always tried to go for the type of feel. They have succeeded. It sounds like they recorded it in my garage!

The CD is growing on me but can't live up to the Justice and Puppets album!

First number - left channel, second number - right channel.

Even if you don't understand what the numbers 'mean', you can certainly see that it is not 'balanced' on both channels.

I think Metallica (now) basically sucks. Kill 'em all, Ride the lightning, and Master of Puppets were essentially the 'blue prints' for this type of music, by which all others should be judged.

They started to loose me after 'Garage Days'. AJFA was o-k. Of course all the whining about Napster, etc....eff em. If I ever do want NEW Metallica, I'll be sure to get a pirate copy. They aren't getting another DIME of my bankroll.

I did however feel the cut from MI2 was appropriate, regarding Jason's departure....(which is what the song is really about)

'Just as soon as I belong.....then it's time I disappear...'

Well if they ever decide to remaster their GOOD stuff I sure as hell hope they don't go after this type of sound!

Anybody ever heard those 24k gold discs of Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets? They were supposedly "remastered" by someone... I've been on the look out for them but on ebay they seem to go for almost $40.

I don't have a clue.. that is why I prefaced the post with the fact that the info came from the PE forum. Two discussions on the Metallica album, I just brought over some information in case it was useful... I certainly want to be a useful engine, Thomas.

Whining about Napster? I happen to agree with bands that don't think that their music should be STOLEN from them off the internet. I think they should be able to choose if they want their music stolen or not. I am a Capitalist in a Capitalist country and I think it's only fair to be consistent.

Metallica sells a product, that product is music. What right do you have to steal that product from the producer of that product? Lets call a spade a spade here.

We have undoubtably reached a technical point in the music industry where certain issues about music 'sharing' need to be addressed, but I think that Metallica has a lot more of an arguement than you or I ever will against them. Not to mention that they were representing hundreds of bands in their "whining".

I heard the first cut off their new album yesterday while driving.

I had read this message string before hearing the song and really didn't want to believe the new stuff was bad.

Well, let me tell you, the song I heard was total garbage! I can't believe Metallica put out something as horrible as this! Atleast they won't have to worry about pirated copies on the internet....cause nobody is going to want this hunk of garbage!

    Metallica...time to retire!

if they charged a reasomble price for the cd then i would think people would not buy them and plus the record company makes most of the profit. most artest make their money out on tour.

You're right most artists make money on tour. They still make some jingle off their CD's and that was their gripe and many others. I don't think that they charge too much for CD's, it's not like were forced to buy music. It's not a necessity. If people stopped buying CD's the price would come down.

You are right, we aren't forced to buy music, we can *download* it for free.

Believe me, I see and understand the points of your (the artists) argument, and they are valid, 100%, but something about multi-millionaires whining about money strikes a cord with me that I just can't get past.

    I kinda liked the album:

    1) I've only heard it once, in my car

2)It kinda sounds like they couldnt afford snare drums, and just hunted around the garage for something suitable, like a trash can top. and im a fan of the drummer

    3) it was 10 bucks, not a bad deal, free DVD, too.

Im about to go get it from my car I will give an update after I hear it in system #1. (as good as the Bose stereo rocks in my Acura)

You're 100% right about that. It doesn't make much sense to me, but then again I'm not them. I don't have the perspective they have, who knows....In principle I agree with you....I focus my displeasure more in the record companies than in the artists though.

I don't know, this arguement is pretty much useless. I download music as well. I don't mean to be hypocritical because I'm not, it's just that nothing is really stopping anyone from do it. Either something else needs to be done technologically to stop people from DLing stuff certain artists (some love it, great exposure..free advertising persay, and I agree with that) don't want DLed....

...or the laws have to get tougher. I'm going to have to go with technological advancement because I don't see the point in making new laws when they can't even enforce the ones they have on the books.

As a person who believes in the capitalist market I think that if a band doesn't want their stuff stolen they should have a right to prosecute those who do....even as unrealistic as we both may think it is we don't put limits on peoples earning potentials in this country.

Blah...I guess I shouldn't have said anything because I know that you and I are seeing it the same way....It's just that I see so many peoples contempt for Metallica based soley on their Napster suits so I felt the need to say something. I base my contempt for them on their **** music as of late.
