I'm am looking for input with choosing a new dvd. I currently have an older Yamaha non blue ray dvd that has served me well. I was thinking of getting a Blueray but I want to be able to play other video codecs like MP4 and avi.

I would also like to get something that will load relitivley fast. I'm not too concerned about cost but don't want to spend more than necessary to get what I need.

Any suggestions would be apprieciated.

I hear good things about the OPPO bdp-83. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I have read many good reviews on it.

The Oppo is a great choice... and if it's too expensive, their BDP-80 should get you by just fine as well. Good luck!

The older Oppo (970, 980, 982) models are excellent multi-disk players if you don't need Blu-Ray. you can pick them up for around $100.00.

I have a OPPO BDP-83 SE coming. I've heard so many good things about this player, and with the SE upgrade, it should be fantastic. It will play just about anything you can put in it.

Not to rain on the Oppo parade....everyone here seems to like them. But if you just want a good cheap older DVD that can play almost anything try some of the older Pioneer or Pioneer ELITE models. There was even one for sale here recently.

I'm not an Oppo man what can I say. BTW why doesn't Bernal have a post here?

    Good Luck Tim,

Oppo are definitely great players however, +1 on the Pioneer Elite

If you do not want the BluRay experience, you could also keep your eyes open for an HD DVD player since many are selling to move to BluRay. They make for great DVD player and up-scaler!

    Reno,

Wasn't sure if he was going to go Blu-ray or not if you look at the original post.

In any case. Congrats Tim...Sonys are nice units...you'll enjoy that.
