I think I bought Monitor 7's

at a flea market for $10 but what are these tweeters (see photo)? After doing much reading I have no idea what these are or what the previous owner was thinking - taping the tweeters in place. Can someone shed some light on this?

Also, notice that the surround on the driver is damaged. Can I repair this with silicon, replace the surround or do I need a replacement?

The speakers also have external fuses which customer support told me should be 1 amp 250 volt fast blow. The cabinets are in rough shape but I would like to restore these so any help/advice is much appreciated.

Once I decide what to do about the tweeters and the driver I will update the crossovers.

Thanks
Lou

This is right up there with the cardboard sub.

That is not the original tweeter, and also the mid woofer is not original. The cabinet does look like a Monitor 7 though.

IMO not worth the $10. You'd have to spend over $100 just to get the original drivers, and who knows what else was done to them.

    Welcome to Club Polk!

They would sound better if you replaced the inferior electrical tape with audiophile quality duct tape.

Those are just awesome! I would send them to Polk HQ as a start for their hall of shame!

    Get another set.

I would throw them in the Gulf and hope they plug the oil leak.

You know I just saw an episode of the Mythbuster's Duct tape extravaganza. I think they forgot to do SPEAKERS!

Don't be too hasty. If the woofers, passive radiators and crossover are intact. And if the cabinet and grill cloth look to be in pretty good shape. You can get a used pair of SL2000 tweeters for about $20, and do a little carpentry work to patch the botched tweeter replacement.

Even with the SL2000 tweeters the Monitor 7's are a terrific sounding pair of speakers. If you like the sound and the tweaters may be a little bright. A new pair of soft dome replacement tweeters from Polk would cost you about $100.

Did the Polks come with the stands?

Those tweeters are real beauties! At least you could sell the XO's and PR's to recover your $10 if you don't feel like repairing them.

Look closer, that isn't a Polk MW driver either. Frankenpolks at their best. If the passives are in OK shape, sell them to recoupe your $10 & junk the rest.

    Junk them...

Not really. save for the passive, nothing looks original. I especially like the tape around the tweeter... some seriously professional install work there.

Realistically, as has been said above, they're not worth the money to fix up... as you can usually find fully operational sets for less than money it would take to buy the parts individually.

At $10, you did okay. Passives and XO's are worth that easy.

Looks like a micro screen shaver in the tweeter hole, sometimes those can go for big $.

YOU read above. I acknowledge in my post that I'm repeating what's been said above. I'm not some shmuck trying to get my post count up, so back off.

Snarky comments contribute less than redundancy.

I pulled the crossovers and more creativity (see photo). Also what is not shown is the speaker wire taped to the mid leads.

I removed the duct tape and the tweeters were held in place by silicone. The mids are radio shack replacements.

Anyway, I've decided that given all the abuse these speakers have taken I am going to restore them - even if I don't like the sound it will make a good story.
