Just Enjoy the Music...

I'm sitting here on my couch, listening to a Buddha Lounge collection (yes, I listen to that crap, too) while drinking a brandy and coke, and I must say, it is so nice to sit back, relax and listen. I'm pretty new to this hobby, but from what I can tell it seems some people get so caught up in the electronics and the gear, they forget why we are here: to enjoy good music. Not everything is about upgrading constantly, fancy gear, high-dollar price tags and elitism. I really like the sound of my 2 systems, and I have not put much money into either one. I've had some help from CP along the way, and thanks again to all the members of this great forum. But even going off of MSRP, I have a pretty budget main system. And it still sounds great. Trust me, it's not the best I've heard (Edge/ Audio Physic/Clearaudio combo gets that honor) but it's still a damn good sounding system. It's possible to get great sound without spending your whole months salary on a hifi. The industry has come a long way; 10-20 years ago, you couldn't get the price/performance ratios you can these days. My point is, I think everyone should not worry about what they don't have, don't worry about the newest gear. Just sit down, relax and listen to what you have. Enjoy the music, Polkies!

Of course the ultimate reason for getting into this hobby is the love of music and listening. As far as I'm concerned, the other part of this hobby is the constant tweaks, gear upgrades and mods, cable upgrades etc to eek out every iota of performance that your rig can put out. That is the fun part for me.

Being a vinyl nut, I find great pleasure in prepping an LP for play. Sure it takes time but the smile attained when listening is akin to Jack Nicholson's "Joker."

Back in the '80s when I was REALLY obsessive I would set the VTA on each record and make note of the setting on the record jacket. That equates to about 40 minutes of adjustments and then 45 minutes of listening. My obsessiveness has toned down with age but I still like to eek out every ounce of performance from my rig. Then I get to smiling while listening.

Very nice comments. Enjoy your down time/relax time. It is great to put on some tunes and kick back. Did the same on Saturday, listening to David Bowie and sipping on Cruzan rum & pineapple! Cheers!

ditto on sitting, sipping, and enjoying the music.

Of course it's always nice to upgrade your system, to land a new and better pair of speakers, amp, tt, or cartridge or whatever.

But discovering new artists and new genres and expanding your listening enjoyment is priceless.

Many of us have said this more than a few times over the years. Sometimes ya just have to stop and enjoy the music on what you have. It's the appreciation of the music, not the gear, that draws us into this hobby, though the gear does help and plays an important role, you don't have to be Donald Trump to get good sounds.

Oh trust me, I love upgrades as much as the next guy. It is a big part of the fun. But I think sometimes I, along with others, spend so much time thinking about the next step and wishing for new gear that I forget how good the stuff I already have sounds. A nice listening session always reminds you, though. I blame my girlfriends dad; every time I visit him, his system makes me green with envy, but one day I'll get there and in the meantime, my little budget rig sounds pretty darned good.
